Dredd - Intervista a Karl Thaning

Cominciamo con una domanda classica: Cosa puoi dirci sul tuo personaggio, Giudice Chan?

Chan è un Giudice che si è lasciato corrompere da Ma-Ma. È diventato apatico e non crede più nel sistema. Disprezza Giudice Dredd e i suoi ideali altruistici. Nonostante ciò ha paura di Dredd, ed è anche desideroso di provare a metterlo al tappeto in un combattimento uno contro uno.

Come sei stato coinvolto in Dredd? Hai dovuto partecipare ad un'audizione?

Ho fatto un audizione per il ruolo. Infatti, sono mancato alle audizioni iniziali. Stavo facendo delle riprese a Johannesburg quando loro stavano facendo i casting a Città del Capo, e poi partecipavo a delle riprese a Città del Capo, quando facevano i casting a Johannesburg, così il mio agente ha contattato i produttori e hanno messo su un'audizione attraverso Skype - cosa che non avevo mai fatto prima. Mi hanno chiamato per il giorno successivo per dirmi che mi era stata riservata la parte.

Quanto hai lavorato per Dredd?

I giorni delle mie riprese sono stati divisi sporadicamente in due mesi. Ho avuto un sacco di lavoro da stunt, principalmente riguardante una scena di combattimento con Karl Urban, così mentre non partecipavo alle riprese, facevo le prove per quello. Abbiamo fatto un notevole allenamento militare e sulla sicurezza con le pistole.

Come ci si sente ad indossare l'uniforme e l'elmetto dei Giudici?

Adoro i fumetti e li leggevo tutto il tempo da bambino - e continuo a farlo, infatti - quindi era completamente surreale indossare tutta quella pelle. Guardo ogni film basato sui fumetti che esce quindi non posso rispondere con precisione a questa domanda. C'erano momenti in cui mi sentivo invincibile nel film, ma quelle divise erano calde e scomode. Indossare l'elmetto mi ha stancato un po' - Ho sfruttato questo per rendere Chan privo di emozioni e impegnato a servire sé stesso.

Cosa puoi dirci riguardo al regista, Pete Travis e riguardo al resto del cast (Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby e Lena Headey)?

Sono stato abbastanza fortunato da aver lavorato già prima con Pete. Ho avuto un piccolo ruolo in Endgame, che è stato girato in Sud Africa un paio d'anni fa. È un gran regista con una forte visione. È un regista che vede e conosce ogni fotogramma che vuole. Questo lo rispetto. Andiamo d'accordo e spero di lavorare di nuovo con lui. Anche lavorare con Alex Garland mi è piaciuto molto. Ha molta passione per quello che fa e riesce a vedere che aspetto dovrebbe avere il prodotto finale. Olivia e Lena erano grandi - sempre a ridere e a creare una buona energia sul set. Karl e io abbiamo provato un paio di giorni per la scena del combattimento, assicurandoci di attenerci alla coreografia e di non farci male a vicenda. È un vero guerriero. Sempre a chiedermi di colpirlo più forte e lanciarlo più lontano. È un vero professionista ed è attaccato al suo personaggio.

Qual'era la tua impressione durante la produzione?

È stata una grande produzione con grandi set. Quello che mi ha impressionato di più è stata la professionalità dell'intera crew. È grande lavorare col talento, dentro e fuori casa.

Cosa puoi dirci riguardo ai tuoi prossimi progetti?

Nell'immediato futuro, dirigerò un paio di progetti, e poi tornerò a recitare, in un film chiamato Bloedsuiers.

Let's start with a classic question: What can you tell us about your character, Judge Chan?
 
Chan is a Judge who allowed himself to be corrupted by Ma-Ma. He's become apathetic and doesn't believe in the system any more. He despises Judge Dredd and his altruistic ideals. Although he fears Dredd, he is also eager to try and take him down in one on one combat.

How did you get involved in Dredd? Did you have to audition for it?

I auditioned for the role. In fact, I missed the initial auditions. I was shooting in Johannesburg when they were casting in Cape Town, and then shooting in Cape Town when they were casting in Johannesburg, so my agent contacted the producers and they set up an audition through Skype – which I had never done before. They called the next day to say I had booked the role.

How much did you work on Dredd?

My shooting days were split sporadically over two months. I had a lot of stunt work, mainly involving a fight sequence with Karl Urban, so when I wasn't shooting, I was rehearsing for that. We had a considerable amount of gun safety and military training.

How does it feel to wear the Judges uniform and the helmet?

I love comic books and used to read them all the time as a kid – I still do, in fact – so it was completely surreal to wear all that leather. I watch every comic book movie that is released so I still can't answer that question accurately. There were moments where I felt invincible in the fiction world sense of it all, but those suits were hot and uncomfortable. Wearing the helmet cut me off from it all a bit –I used this to allow Chan to be emotionless and committed to serving himself.

What can you tell us about the director, Pete Travis, and the rest of the cast (Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey)?  

I have been lucky enough to have worked with Pete before. I had a small role in Endgame which was shot in South Africa a few years ago. He is a great director with a strong vision. He is a visual director and knows each frame that he wants. I respect that. We get along well and I hope to work with him again. I also really enjoyed working with Alex Garland. He has so much passion for what he does and also sees how the end product should look. Olivia and Lena were great – always laughing and creating a good set energy. Karl and I rehearsed for a few days around our fight scene, making sure we stuck to the choreography, and also to make sure we didn't hurt each other. He is a real warrior. Always asking me to hit him harder and throw him further. He is a true professional and he nailed his character.

What was your impression during the production?

It was a big production with big studio sets. What impressed me the most was the professionalism of the entire crew. It's great to work with talent, at home and abroad.

What can you tell us about your next projects?

In the immediate future, I am directing a few projects, and then back to acting where I will be in a film called Bloedsuiers.
