The Avengers: Intervista a Kevin Feige - Parte 2

Vi presentiamo la seconda e ultima parte della nostra intervista a Kevin Feige (qui la prima parte) realizzata durante la tavola rotonda svoltasi a Roma nel corso della premiere di The Avengers. Il presidente di produzione dei Marvel Studios ci ha parlato della pellicola diretta da Joss Whedon e dei prossimi film targati Marvel.

- Quali sono state le difficoltà principali nel mettere insieme tanti personaggi così diversi come supereroi, esseri umani, dei?

La sfida principale è stata quella di trovare qualcuno che scrivesse la sceneggiatura e dirigesse un film che potesse includere tutti i personaggi. Ci sono molti effetti speciali in questo film, più di quanti ne abbiate mai visti, per cui sapevamo che se non avessimo avuto la persona giusta per la realizzazione di questo film, sarebbe stato solo e completamente incentrato sugli effetti speciali. E volevamo evitarlo. Volevamo che fosse più focalizzato sui personaggi, sull’humor, su quanto potessero essere divertenti un dio, un tizio in un costume di ferro e il grosso mostro verde tutti insieme. E il regista è la persona che deve assicurarsi che tutto abbia una certa armonia, e che sia la storia che i personaggi siano mostrati nel migliore dei modi possibili.

- Riguardo gli altri personaggi Marvel, come Doctor Strange, ci sono molte voci a riguardo – saranno in qualche modo connessi ai Vendicatori o saranno presentati come personaggi a sé stanti?

La cosa fantastica dei personaggi Marvel dei fumetti è che tutti provengono dallo stesso universo, anche se non si incontrano sempre. A volte quell’universo si riduce alla città di New York, o Malibu, e a volte Tony Stark vola fino ad Asgaard che è addirittura un altro pianeta. Le storyline non saranno sempre connesse, ed infatti abbiamo tre film su Iron Man a sé stanti. Anche il prossimo film di Thor si concentrerà soltanto su Thor e su Jane Foster, interpretata da Natalie Portman. Di sicuro non vedremo questi altri personaggi in Iron Man 3. Ma potremmo ritrovarli prima o poi, anche se per ora non abbiamo in programma di far incrociare le loro strade con quelle di altri personaggi.

- Ci saranno riferimenti agli Avengers nei future film Marvel?

Vogliamo che tutti i film siano fantastici, e che le persone vadano a vederli e se li godano sia che abbiano visto gli altri film prima, che non. Iron Man 3 torna ad essere come in Iron Man 1, con una storia incentrata su Tony Stark; lo stesso accadrà per Thor 2, e così via. Dopo gli Avengers, Tony Stark può tornare a casa a Malibu, dove lo abbiamo già visto in Iron Man 1 e Iron Man 2; Thor, come vedremo, torna ad Asgaard; Capitan America non può tornare indietro nel tempo, ai tempi della Seconda Guerra Mondiale negli anni ’40. Per cui è bloccato ai giorni nostri, ed interagirà con lo S.H.I.E.L.D. e con Nick Fury. Quindi tra tutti gli altri film, vedremo che Capitan America sarà quello legato maggiormente agli Avengers.

- Le recensioni su questo film sono state tutte piuttosto buone; soltanto una affermava che il lato comico del film a volte poteva risultare un po’ troppo. Cosa puoi dirci a riguardo?

Credo che quel lato sia molto importante. Vogliamo vedere il pubblico ridere e divertirsi. Per questo abbiamo fatto questo film. Non ho ancora letto quella critica in particolare, ma abbiamo sempre cercato di dare al film un particolare senso dell’humor, perché permette ad un pubblico più vasto di goderselo. È come succede nel mondo reale: devi raggiungere il cuore del pubblico attraverso l’humor e le risate.

- Se dovessi scegliere uno tra I Vendicatori, quale sarebbe?

La verità è che abbiamo trascorso così tanto tempo lavorando con tutto il team che vedo questo film come la storia dei Vendicatori insieme, uniti, come se fossero un’unica entità. Al momento la mia preferenza va a tutti loro messi insieme, perché lavorano insieme in questo show, e alla fine questa cosa ha un senso.

- Cosa puoi dirci sugli altri Vendicatori che non appaiono nel film ma che sono presenti nei fumetti?

C’erano diverse scene che li includevano nelle prime bozze della sceneggiatura, ma non c’era spazio per troppi personaggi. Comunque ci sono tantissimi Vendicatori, per cui se dovessimo fare un altro film, sapremmo già quali sono i nostri due o tre personaggi preferiti che ci piacerebbe includere. Credo che parte del divertimento per i futuri film sugli Avengers sarebbe nell’introdurre uno o due personaggi nuovi in ognuno di essi. Non vogliamo però inserirne troppi, ma vogliamo che ognuno di essi abbia i propri spazi all’interno del film, per cui non riesco a visualizzare un giorno in cui avremmo 25 Vendicatori nella stessa pellicola.

-Come mai hai scelto di usare la motion capture in questo film per Hulk, a differenza degli altri in cui c’era soltanto il “mostro” creato in CGI?

Delle versioni particolari della motion capture sono state usate in tutti i film di Hulk. Però questa è a prima volta che un’altra persona al di là del regista fa uso della mocap, e questa persona è Mark Ruffalo. Abbiamo deciso che una delle varie cose che volevamo ottenere era dare l’idea che Bruce Banner ed Hulk fossero la stessa persona, per quel che riguarda le loro fattezze. Mark è un attore incredibile, e di sicuro poteva interpretare entrambi. Non solo questo; abbiamo anche deciso che il viso di Hulk doveva avere gli stessi tratti di Mark, cosa che avevamo evitato di proposito negli altri film. Ma stavolta, per riuscire a tirare fuori emozioni e senso dell’humor da Hulk, per far sì che Bruce fosse in qualche modo connesso ad Hulk, volevamo “avvertire” Hulk nel viso di Mark, in un modo mai visto prima.

- What were the main difficulties in assembling a lot of so different people like superheroes, humans, gods?

The biggest challenge was finding somebody to write the script and direct a movie that could showcase all the characters. There are a lot of special effects in this movie, more than we ever had in any movie, and we knew that if we hadn’t the right person in making the movie, then suddenly it would just be about special effects. And we didn’t want that. We wanted it to be about the characters, about the humor, about how funny can be the silly god, the guy in the iron suit and the big green monster all get together. And the director is the one who would bring it all together and make sure that the story and the characters rise to the top.”

- About other characters, there are a lot of rumors about other Marvel ones like Doctor Strange – will they be related to The Avengers too or will they be on their own?

The great thing about the Marvel characters in the comic books is that they all come from the same universe, so it’s all in the same place. They don’t always meet up, but they’re all from one universe. Sometimes that universe is in the city of New York, Malibu, and sometimes Tony Stark goes to another planet that is Asgaard. The storyline not always comes together, in fact we will have three standalone Iron Man movies. The next Thor movie really just focuses on just Thor and Jane Foster played by Natalie Portman. We just want some added bonus and drama in our creative sandbox. Definitely we won’t see those other characters in Iron Man 3. But we could be seeing them at some point, and no plans about the crossing with other characters.

- There will be more about the Avengers in the future Marvel movies?

We want all the movies to be great, and people to go and watch and enjoy each movie whether they paid attention to all the other movies or not; Iron Man 3 returns very much as it was in Iron Man 1, with a Tony Stark storyline; Thor 2 the same, and so on. From The Avengers, Tony Stark can go home to Malibu where we saw him in Iron Man 1 and Iron Man 2; Thor, as we’ll see, goes back to Asgard; Captain America can’t go back in time, to WWII in the 40s. So he is stuck in present day and he will have interactions with the S.H.I.E.L.D., with Nick Fury. So we will see that among all the movies, Captain America will be the one connected closer to the Avengers.

- The reviews about this movie from all around the world were all pretty good; just one was claiming that the comedy side of this movie sometimes can be a bit too much. What can you tell us about this side of the movie?

I think it’s very important. We want to see the audience wrapped up in laughter, cheers. That’s why we made the movie. I haven’t read those complaints yet but we have always wanted this movie to have a particular sense of humor. We think it allows a broader audience to enjoy it. It’s like it works in real life: you have to get to the audience’s heart through humor, laughter.

- If you had to pick one of the Avengers, who would it be?

The truth is that we spent so much time working with the team, as a team, that I only see this movie as the story of the avengers themselves, looking at the team as a single entity. Right now my favorite is all of them together, because they all work together in a show, and in the end it all comes together.

- What about the other Avengers who are not in the movie but are in the comic-books?

There were few scenes that included them in the early drafts of the script, but there just wasn’t room for too many characters. However there is a big number of characters among the Avengers, so if we were to make another one, we have sort of chosen our two-three favorite that we’d like to include into the next one. I think that part of the fun of future Avengers movies would be introducing one or two new characters in each. You don’t want too many characters; you want each of them to have their moments inside the movie, so I don’t envision a day where we will have 25 Avengers in the same movie.

- Why did you choose to use the motion-capture in this movie for Hulk, compared to the other ones where only the CGI was involved?

Some versions of the motion capture has been used in all the movies. This is the first time though that one other person besides the director does the mocap and it’s Mark Ruffalo. We decided that one of the different things we wanted to do was to have Bruce Banner and Hulk to be the same person. Mark is an amazing actor, and he can do both. Not only that; we decided that Hulk’s face should have had Mark’s features and that was something we purposely avoided in the other movies. But this time, to get emotions and humor out of the Hulk, to get Bruce to be connected to the Hulk, we decided to feel Hulk in Mark’s face, and that’s why we have Bruce connected to the Hulk in a way it has never been before.
