Esclusiva: Extinction Seed by GG Studio

Ormai da qualche anno quella di GG Studio si è affermata come un’interessante realtà del mondo del fumetto. Tra autoproduzioni e lavori realizzati per Marvel Comics, gli autori di questo gruppo hanno esteso in maniera stabile la loro sfera d’azione anche oltreoceano, iniziando a mettere radici all’interno del mercato statunitense.
Non a caso il loro ultimo lavoro, Extinction Seed, esordirà con un numero 0 proprio negli Stati Uniti, in settembre, per sbarcare successivamente anche in Italia e in Europa. Il progetto si segnala per un’impostazione piuttosto particolare e ambiziosa, prevedendo l’uscita di una miniserie da cui in seguito dipartiranno tre serie regolari incentrate sulle tre protagoniste, con un universo narrativo in espansione.
Seppure in rete era già possibile rintracciare accenni a Extinction Seed, noi di Comicus siamo ora in grado di offrirvi per la prima volta e in esclusiva uno sguardo più articolato al progetto, nonché di raccontarvi i maggiori elementi che lo caratterizzeranno, con un’ampia panoramica anche sull’aspetto visivo della miniserie.

Scritta da Davide Aicardi, disegnata da Livia Pastore e colorata da Alessia Nocera, sotto la supervisione di Giano (Giuliano Monni), Extinction Seed avrà come tempo principale della storia gli anni ’60, ma vedrà delle ricadute anche ai giorni nostri, con un giornalista impegnato a ricostruire un mistero dalle tinte inquietanti e pericolose.
Di seguito, vi proponiamo gli elementi principali della trama e i ritratti delle tre protagoniste, mostrandovi anche alcuni studi sui personaggi (opera di Giano e del designer Giuseppe Cafaro), nonché numerose copertine e variant dei numeri 0 e 1 (solo alcune delle quali già diffuse), e cinque tavole complete estratte dal numero 0.


Tutto prende avvio nel 1963, con il ritrovamento di un oggetto tecnologico dalle potenzialità infinite, che scatena immediatamente l’interesse di diverse compagini che si mettono sulle tracce del manufatto con lo scopo di entrarne in possesso per primi e sfruttarlo per i fini più disparati, quando non opposti. Un corpo segreto e sperimentale, che fa capo direttamente al governo degli Stati Uniti, lo vuole per scopi militari e politici; una misteriosa organizzazione che da sempre controlla e influenza l’andamento della storia dell’uomo, pensa che debba essere distrutto prima che possa finire in mani sbagliate; una rediviva cellula di neonazisti lo brama per realizzare finalmente l’agghiacciante sogno della venuta di un nuovo reich.

Ma la ricerca dell’arcano reperto non coinvolge solo sette segrete, strutture paramilitari e gruppi di fanatici. Anche tre inconsapevoli ragazze dalle particolari abilità, infatti, si troveranno coinvolte nella caccia, finendo per diventare esse stesse l’ultima difesa contro il seme dell’estinzione.

Cynthia Morrigan, bellissima fotografa londinese di giorno, inafferrabile ladra di notte, viene contattata per rubare dal museo di Berlino un antico manufatto accadico legato indissolubilmente alla scoperta su cui tutti vorrebbero mettere le mani. Cynthia è Mist.


Caroline Mess, sarcastica e determinata studentessa di Albuquerque, nasconde un segreto che non sa di custodire ma con il quale deve suo malgrado fare i conti quando si risveglia incatenata a un altare sacrificale, all’interno di un antichissimo tempio Maya. Caroline è Arise.


Infine Cathryn Murphy, assistente personale di un alto funzionario degli Stati Uniti. Per salvarsi la vita è costretta a fuggire e a nascondersi dal suo stesso capo, dopo aver scoperto casualmente il terribile segreto dell’oggetto che tutti stanno cercando. Cathryn è Edge.


Queste le tre protagoniste che, loro malgrado e forzate dagli eventi, dovranno fronteggiare il pericolo imminente e sbrogliare la matassa, tra ipertecnologia ed esseri mitologici.
È su queste tre figure che, alla conclusione di Extinction Seed, si concentreranno le tre serie future, andando inoltre a chiarire e approfondendo alcuni aspetti accennati nella miniserie di cui raccoglieranno i fili.

It’s been few years now since the GG Studio has proved being an interesting reality in the comics scene. Among self-productions and several works made for Marvel Comics, the authors of this group have steadily extended overseas, starting to settle down in the American market.
It’s not a case that their last work, Extinction Seed, will start off with issue #0 in the United States in September, to come then to Italy and to Europe. The project turns out being very peculiar and ambitious, dealing with a short series from which, in a second moment, will come up three regular series based on the three main characters, with a narrative universe in expansion. Although on the web you can already find some mentions to Extinction Seed, we at Comicus are able to offer you for the first time and exclusively, a more articulated look to the project, as well as an overlook on its main elements, with a wide view on the visual aspect of the miniseries too.

Written by Davide Aicardi (with English translations by Andrea Plazzi), drawn by Livia Pastore and coloured by Alessia Nocera, under the supervision of Giano (Giuliano Monni), Extinction Seed will be mainly set in the 60s, but will also be partially set in our days, with a journalist committed to solve a mystery full of disturbing and dangerous features.
To follow, the main elements of the plot and a portrait of the three main characters, together with some studies on the characters (made by Giano and by designer Giuseppe Cafaro), as well as many covers and variants of issues #0 and #1 (just few of which have been shown already) and five complete boards from issue #0.

Everything starts in 1963, with the finding of a technological object with an infinite potential, which immediately attracts the interest of several organizations which want to sleuth the artifact, aiming to be the first ones to find it and use it with different, sometimes opposed, intents. A secret and experimental force, which heads to the United States government, wants it for military and political purposes; a mysterious organization which has always been controlling and influencing human history thinks it should be destroyed before it ends up in the wrong hands; a neo-nazis cell longs for it to make the dreadful dream of the arrival of a new reich come true.
But the search for the mysterious artifact doesn’t only involve secret sects, paramilitary structures and groups of fanatics. Even three unaware young women with peculiar abilities will actually be involved in this hunt, to eventually become themselves the last defense against this extinction seed.

Cynthia Morrigan, a beautiful londoner photographer during the day and an elusive thief during the night, gets contacted to steal from a Berlin museum an ancient artifact, strictly linked to the discovery which everyone wants to get their hands on. Cynthia is Mist.

Caroline Mess, a sarcastic and determined student in Albuquerque, hides a secret she doesn’t even know to hold, but which she has to answer to when she wakes up chained to a chantry, inside a primeval Maya temple. Caroline is Arise.

To finish with, we have Cathryn Murphy, personal assistant of a chancellor of the United States. To save her own life, she is forced to run away and hide from her own boss, after having casually discovered the terrible secret of the object everyone is looking for. Cathryn is Edge.


They are the three main characters who, regardless and forced by the events, will have to face the imminence and sort it out, among super-technology and mythological creatures.
It’s on these three characters that, once Extinction Seed will be concluded, the three future series will focus, clarifying and expanding few aspects just mentioned in the short series.
