Com'è nata l'idea per Dead Avengers? Era parte della progettazione di "Chaos War" sin dall'inizio o si è sviluppata durante la lavorazione?
Era un'idea che avevo lanciato quando Greg Pak e io ci trovavamo nel mezzo del "Chaos War" meeting, con il nostro team editoriale. Come tutti i tie-in di qualità parte da una conseguenza naturale della serie principale e la porta avanti, costruendo una storia correlata ma indipendente, che valorizza l'intero evento. Da quando "Chaos War" ha iniziato ad imporsi non solo sul pianeta, non solo sull'universo ma sull'intero multivero, Greg e io non abbiamo spazio per affrontare determinati suoi aspetti sulle serie principali.
La storia dei Vendicatori è piena di personaggi morti. Cosa vi ha convinti a servirvi di Visione, Spadaccino, Deathcry, Calabrone e Dr. Druid, invece che di altri?
Sono un grande fan di Avengers e ho voluto scegliere personaggi presi da diversi stadi della serie. La Visione e lo Spadaccino sono due classici delle ere di Stan Lee e Roy Thomas. Capitan Mar-Vell dominò le storie degli anni Settanta. Roger Stern introdusse Dr. Druid e la Calabrone femminile durante la sua gestione negli anni Ottanta. Lo stesso nome di Deathcry può rappresentare gli anni Novanta, con i suoi artigli, scollature e problemi di controllo della rabbia.
Il cast è composto da tipologie molto diverse di personaggi. Che tipo di dinamiche possiamo aspettarci tra loro?
I Dead Avengers si trovano obbligati in una situazione davvero strana – riuniti tutti da una forza misteriosa per un motivo specifico nel mezzo della Chaos War – e le loro reazioni sono davvero selvagge. Alcuni di loro sono stati usati per danneggiare i Vendicatori, come la Visione che (manovrata dalla sua folle moglie, Scarlet) li ha colpiti in modo molto grave durante la sua morte. Calabrone fu assassinata da un Iron Man vittima del controllo mentale, in una morte che fu appena notata, così ha la possibilità di farsi un nome. Lo Spadaccino ha passato la sua intera vita cercando una causa per cui dare la vita e ora che l'ha trovata non ha intenzione di arrendersi. Mar-Vell è un caso interessante dal momento che è l'unico ad essere morto in un letto – di cancro – ed è possibile che avesse preferito rimanere morto. Penso che probabilmente vedrete più Marvel Zombies, ma passo la bacchetta a un altro scrittore. Mi sono divertito davvero con quel franchise mentre ci lavoravo, ma Marvel Zombies 5 è stato il mio ultimo per i tempi a venire, e ora andrò avanti a realizzare altri progetti.

How is the idea for Dead Avengers born? Was it part of the plan for Chaos War since the beginning or did it develop during the work?
It was an idea I pitched out when Greg Pak and I were having our Chaos War meetings with out editorial team. Like all good tie-ins, it takes a natural consequence from the main series and runs with it, building a related but standalone story that enhances the overall event. And since Chaos War takes over not just the globe, not just the universe, but the entire multiverse, there are aspects of it Greg and I simply don't have room to cover in the main series.
Avengers' history is full of dead characters. What persuaded you to use this Vision, Swordsman, DeathCry, Yellowjacket and Dr Druid, instead of others?
I'm a huge Avengers fan, and I wanted to choose characters from different stages in the franchise. The Vision and Swordsman are both classics from the Stan Lee/Roy Thomas eras. Captain Mar-Vell dominated 1970s tales. Roger Stern brought in Dr. Druid and the female Yellowjacket during his run as writer in the 1980s. Deathcry's name might as well be "The Nineties," with her claws, cleavage and anger management issues.
The cast is made of very different kind of characters. What kind of dynamic can we expect Between Them?
The Dead Avengers find themselves thrust in a very strange situation - gathered together by a mysterious force for a very specific message in the middle of the Chaos War - and their reactions to it very wildly. A few of them, like Vision, was used to hurt the Avengers in a very serious way in his death (thanks to his mad wife, the Scarlet Witch) so he sees a chance at redemption. Yellowjacket was murdered by a mind-controlled Iron Man in a death that was barely noticed, so she has a chance to make a name for herself. Swordsman has spent his entire life looking for a cause worth dying for, and now that he's got it he's not going to give it up. Mar-Vell is an interesting case because he's the only one who died in bed - of cancer - and he may actually prefer being dead. Dr. Druid doesn't know, in his Nature-First belief system, if they have any business being here in the first place.
So as you can see there are lot of varied attitudes here.
But they had better figure out how they're going to work as a team, because they're going up against one of the Chaos King's main lieutenants, classic Avengers villain Grim Reaper - I mean, c'mon, who else are the Dead Avengers gonna fight?
One predictable question: at the end of the story, will all the characters be dead again or will someone come back to life?
That would be telling.
You have some experience with dead super heroes, being the writer of three Marvel Zombies books. What future for this franchise? We will see more zombies?
I think you will probably be seeing more Marvel Zombies, but I'm passing the baton to another writer. I really enjoyed the franchise while I worked on it, but Marvel Zombies 5 was my last for the time being, and I'm moving on to to work on other projects.
