Benvenuto su Comicus per parlarci di Fall of Hulks, Mr. Pak. Su un piano più ampio, quello che sta succedendo nei volumi di Hulk deriva dalla tua saga “Planet Hulk”. Quanti di questi sviluppi avevi già pianificato in quel periodo?
Mentre stavo scrivendo Planet Hulk, stavo già stendendo la bozza di "World War Hulk" ed elaborando le idee base di Skaar: Son of Hulk. Verso la conclusione di "World War Hulk", Jeph Loeb, l’editor responsabile di Hulk Mark Paniccia ed io iniziammo a definire le modalità di come le trame della saga riguardante l’Hulk Rosso di Jeph e la mia di Skaar potessero alla fine convergere in "Fall of the Hulks" e "World War Hulk". Nelle tue storie stai scrivendo di un Bruce Banner "senza Hulk": decisamente un'idea originale. In che modo liberare Bruce da Hulk ha reso il personaggio più intrigante?
In Planet Hulk abbiamo raccontato una storia quasi totalmente dal punto di vista di Hulk. Ciò ci ha resi liberi da ogni vincolo e si è dimostrato un sacco divertente, permettendoci di mostrare Hulk nei panni di Hulk, alle prese con uno straordinario viaggio emozionale. Ora avrò l’occasione di concentrarmi interamente su Banner e sarà uno sballo. Abbiamo riportato Banner alle sue origini, quando era uno dei più brillanti inventori dell’Universo Marvel, in grado di tirar fuori dal cilindro chissà quale nuova e pazzesca arma.
Ma la cosa più importante è che Banner non è più in grado di trasformarsi in Hulk, il che significa per lui non temere più la sua rabbia come solitamente accadeva in passato. Questo implica che Banner potrà dar sfogo a quella terribile rabbia concentrata e repressa per anni. E siccome Banner è un tipo molto brillante, potrebbe finire col diventare più pericoloso di Hulk stesso. L’editor in chief Joe Quesada ha espresso parole di grande apprezzamento per la mia run su Incredible Hulk e per quella di Jeph su Hulk, elogiando il modo in cui abbiamo incrementato il cast di personaggi di supporto a Hulk negli anni. Penso siano molte le cose da dire per raccontare ed introdurre nuovi sviluppi nel rapporto tra Hulk e Banner. Welcome on Comicus Mr. Pak to talk with us about Fall of Hulks.
To a large extent, what is happening in the Hulk's books spring from your "Planet Hulk" saga. How much of these developments did you conceived at that time?
While was writing Planet Hulk, I was outlining “World War Hulk” and hammering out the basic ideas behind Skaar: Son of Hulk. And then towards the end of “World War Hulk”, Jeph Loeb, Hulk editor Mark Paniccia and I started planning out how Jeph's "Red Hulk" saga and my own Skaar storylines would eventually converge in “Fall of the Hulks” and "World War Hulk". It's pretty wild to look back and see how much the storyline has grown. And it's even more exciting to look forward and see how all of the different threads and mysteries are coming together for some pretty mind-blowing payoffs over the next six months.
In your stories you are writing an "Hulkless" Bruce Banner: Quite original idea. In what way, freeing Bruce from the Hulk made the character more intriguing?
During Planet Hulk, we told a story almost entirely from the Hulk's point of view. That was liberating and tons of fun and let us show the Hulk taking a giant emotional journey as the Hulk. Now I'm getting the chance to focus entirely on Banner, and it's a blast. We've returned Banner to his roots as one of the most brilliant inventors in the Marvel Universe, so you never know what crazy new weapon he'll pull out of his satchel. But more importantly, Banner's no longer capable of turning into the Hulk, which means he might not be as fearful of his own anger as he used to be. Which means Banner himself can express some of the hot, focussed anger he's been repressing for years. And given how brilliant Banner is, he might just end up being more dangerous than the Hulk himself. I have to give Jeph big props and thanks for the set up, incidentally -- it was his inspiration to depower Banner and see what would come next.
Hulk's books are action-packed and full of fights. It's hard to develop character's personality when they're beating each other?
The challenge is to make every fight personal. Right now Banner is fighting to save his wife Betty, who he just learned is still alive. But he's also in the middle of an ongoing father/son dustup with his savage son Skaar. He's pulled by the strongest family ties in two potentially conflicting directions, which gives a special urgency to every fight in the book.
The other challenge is to find ways to steal small intimate moments between the action. I'm particularly fond of the scenes with Skaar and Banner sharing milkshakes and checking out comics in Incredible Hulk #602. And the final pages of Incredible Hulk #608 should blow a few minds.
What lies ahead for Skaar? He will continue to live on Earth? Or he will meet his brother Hiro Kala? If he will survive to Fall of Hulks...
I can't say much for fear of spoilers. But we've been building a huge story for Skaar for almost two years now and massive payoffs are just down the road. And no, we haven't forgotten Hiro Kala, either.
In the last years we have seen a real family grown around Hulk, made of Red Hulk, various She-Hulks, sons and daughters. What are the strong points and the weak points of these kinds of supporting cast?
Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada has very kindly said nice things about my run on Incredible Hulk and Jeph's run on Hulk by praising the way we've built up the Hulk's supporting cast over the years. I think there's a lot to be said for throwing Banner and the Hulk into new kinds of relationships. The Hulk grew into a hero through his bonding with the Warbound in Planet Hulk. Now Banner is confronting what it means to be a father through his relationship with Skaar. And of course Banner's focussed on saving his wife Betty. All of these are deep, personal relationships that push our central character to high-stakes emotional experiences, which is exactly the kind of compelling drama that keeps a character interesting. The increasing number of Hulks running around also relates directly to the big mysteries at the heart of “Fall of the Hulks” and “World War Hulk” and set up the insane climax we've been building towards all these years.
Fall of Hulks will be follow by “World War Hulk”. How this two events will be connect and how long the Hulk's titles will be involved in this saga?
“Fall of the Hulks” began last month and will continue through March. “World War Hulk” hits in May and will wrap up by the end of the summer. Each month, Jeph's Hulk book and my Incredible Hulk book will come out on the same day, telling parallel stories that will ultimately answer every question, pay off every crazy set up, and unwrap every mystery that we've been building for the past three years. This is the biggest emotional story every told about Bruce Banner. And it's the most massive, smashtastic Hulk action you've ever seen.
Meanwhile the future of your other books, Hercules, seems quite dark... We know that there will be a "funeral" for him. It will be the end of his story?
I won't be coy -- the simple answer is no! The Incredible Hercules saga will continue -- starting in May with Heroic Age: Prince of Power #1! Anyone who's been following Incredible Hercules won't want to miss Prince of Power -- which is also a great jumping-on point for anyone interested in finding out what the book's all about. Prince of Power marks the beginning of the big third act of the epic story Fred Van Lente have been telling since the beginning of our Incredible Hercules run. And it features the return of beloved "Thorcules" artist Reilly Brown -- and Thor himself!
