Come hai deciso di scrivere questa storia?
Il disegnatore Denys Conwan e io stavamo parlando di fare un fumetto insieme. Abbiamo cominciato a parlate di Pantera Nera e del suo rapporto con Capitan America e la cosa si è evoluta naturalmente da lì.
Gli ultimi anni ci hanno mostrato una tendenza al recupero di personaggi e ambientazioni della Golden Age. Secondo te, a cosa è dovuta?
Credo sia l’invecchiamento dei lettori di comic-book. Hanno letto fumetti per moltissimo tempo, ricordano quelle vecchie storie e vogliono riconciliarle con la narrazione più provocatoria del giorno d’oggi.
Hai fatto delle ricerche per scrivere questa storia? Hai letto qualche vecchio fumetto in particolare?
Sono cresciuto leggendo quei fumetti. Oltre a questo, ho visto Inglorious Basterds, che mi ha ispirato.
Quali sono le principali differenze tra la Pantera Nera moderna e quella Golden Age?
Nella seconda guerra mondiale, il nonno di T’Challa, Azzuri il Saggio, è stato Pantera Nera per un po’. Aveva molta esperienza, una moglie e una famiglia. Ha incontrato un Capitan America alla prime armi, all’inizio della sua carriera.
Tornando al presente, recentemente hai introdotto la nuova Pantera Nera. È stato difficile dare un nuovo volto a un personaggio che ha avuto sempre la stessa identità per così tanti anni?
No, è divertente aggiungere elementi al canone, dare un contributo all’eredità che Stan Lee e Jack Kirby ci hanno lasciato.
Nel frattempo… più di due anni fa T’Challa ha sposato Ororo, e il loro matrimonio sembra procedere ottimamente. Che futuro aspetta questa coppia nel Marvel Universe, dove di solito i supereroi si separano facilmente?
Credo che il loro matrimonio sarà come quello di Reed Richards e Sue Storm: una forte unione che durerà.

Welcome on Comicus, Mr. Hudlin, to talk with us about Flags of our Fathers.
How did you decide to write this story?
The artist Denys Cowan and I were talking about doing a book together. We started talking about Black Panther and his relationship to Captain America and it naturally evolved from there.
Last years showed us a trend towards recovering Golden Age characters and settings. In your opinion, what is this due to?
I think it’s the aging of the comic book audience. Comic book fans have been reading comics for a long time, and they remember those old stories and want to reconcile them with today’s more provocative storytelling.
Did you do some research to write this story? Did you read any old book in particular?
I grew up reading those books. That, and watching Inglorious Basterds, which also inspired me.
What are the main differences between the modern Black Panther and the Golden Age Black Panther?
By World War II, T’Challa’s grandfather Azzuri the Wise has been Panther for a while. He was very experienced, with a wife and family. He’s meeting a very green Captain America, still very early in his career.
Back to the present, you recently brought in the new Black Panther. Was it a challenge to give a new face to a characters who had the same identity for so much years?
No, it’s fun to add to the canon, to make a contribution to the legacy that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby gave us.
Meanwhile... more than two years ago T'Challa married Ororo; their marriage seems going great. What kind of future this couple will have in Marvel Universe, where usually superheroes break up very easily?
I think their marriage will be like Reed Richards and Sue Storm of the Fantastic Four, a strong union that will endure.
Following Flags of our Fathers, there will be any other project for you in Marvel?
Right now I have a bunch of film and television projects I need to focus on.
