Hai cominciato a scrivere la serie di Black Panther subito dopo che Reginald Hudlin ha introdotto la nuova protagonista. Come hai cercato di rendere tuo questo personaggio?
Mi hanno chiamato a bordo durante una fase di transizione. T’Challa non è più la Pantera Nera e sua sorella Shuri lo ha sostituito nel ruolo. Questo ha praticamente “resettato” il fumetto e mi ha dato la possibilità di portarlo verso nuove direzioni. Ho diviso la storia tra Shuri e i suoi primi giorni come eroe nazionale e leader di una nazione; T’Challa, che si sta riprendendo dopo essere stato quasi ucciso da Destino in un’imboscata; e i cattivi – Il Dottor Destino, Desturi e Broker. Riguardo i personaggi che amo scrivere… Gesù, su quali personaggi non vorrei mettere le mani? Sono stato un fan Marvel per tutta la mia vita. I miei preferiti sono i Fantastici Quattro, i vari X-Men, Thor, lo Shield e così via. Mi piace scrivere storie di spionaggio e con elementi politici; ma amo anche le grandi storie di fantascienza e quelle incentrate sul personaggio e sull’introspezione.
Quindi… accetto tutto quello che la Marvel voglia affidarmi.

You began to write the Black Panther book right after Reginald Hudlin introduced the new protagonist. How did you try to make this character yours?
I was brought on board during a transition phase. T’Challa is no longer the Panther and his sister, Shuri, has stepped into that role. This essentially rebooted the book, and it gave me an opportunity to spin the book into new directions. I split the story between Shuri and her first days as both the national hero and the leader of the nation; T’Challa, who is recovering from almost being killed by Doom in an ambush; and the villains — Doctor Doom, the Desturi and the Broker. I also gave the book a more global focus by tapping into events in our own world: political unrest, economic problems, nationalism, and so on. I also introduced several new characters to the Marvel Universe, including Wakanda pundits – one conservative and one liberal — who debate the issues tearing Wakanda apart.
We can say that with DoomWar the new Black Panther will show herself in the Marvel Universe. What role do you think she could have in the large pantheon of superheroes of this world?
Shuri is a ‘new’ hero, and that means she’ll be prone to mistakes, overconfidence, self-doubt. In Black Panther #11 we saw her make a bad judgment call (she sucker-punches Namor) that could have killed her. In DoomWar we see her start to go a bit off the rails in terms of rage. These are steps in the growth of a character who is emerging from a minor supporting role and into a serious player. Readers who aren’t familiar with her character should be pleased with what they see in DoomWar. Shuri is a very powerful woman who is fighting with great ferocity to reclaim her country from the hands of villains. And let’s face it, her first real battle is against a conspiracy involving Doctor Doom. Not a bad start.
A lot of characters will appear during DoomWar (Fantastic Four, Deadpool, Wolverine, ect). Why did you decide to use them?
DoomWar begins with the trial of Storm. Wakanda has been overthrown by a militant faction called the Desturi, and they are fiercely opposed to anything foreign. They put Storm on trial as a foreigner and witch and, in a rigged verdict, they condemn her to death. T’Challa and Shuri need to rescue her, but they need some serious muscle to accomplish this. They reach out to Storm’s closest friends – the X-Men. Wolverine, Colossus and Nightcrawler answer the call.
As DoomWar rolls on, the X-Men leave (for reasons you’ll discover if you follow the X-Men books), and T’Challa’s old friend Reed Richards steps in, along with the rest of the Fantastic Four. The FF have been fighting Doom longer than anyone, so this is definitely their fight, too.
Deadpool’s role in the story is that of ‘wildcard’. Doom and T’Challa have become so evenly matched in their deadly game of chess that each of them is scrambling to introduce an x-element to tip the scales in their favor. Deadpool is so mentally damaged that his actions are impossible to predict, but at the same time he’s a tremendously effective fighter. And, bottom line, T’Challa and Shuri offer him a whole lot of money – and he is, after all, a mercenary.
Doom will be the main villain of the story. Now, this character is really in the spotlight, appearing in Thor, Dark Reign and even Fall of Hulks. Will there be any connection between all these stories?
No – DoomWar is set apart from the other storylines in which he appears. However, the events at the end of DoomWar will almost certainly impact any future Doom stories.
After DoomWar, what will happen to the Black Panther book?
At this writing I’m scheduled to continue as the regular writer, and I’m in discussions with my editor at Marvel about some bold new directions I’d like to explore. My plan is to make the book more of a mainstream book that interacts more smoothly with the rest of the Marvel Universe.
Do you have any other project in Marvel, beside Black Panther? There is a character you really want to write?
I’m currently writing two limited series – DoomWar and another called Marvel Infected. That will be a four-issue limited series released under the Marvel Knights imprint. It’s a bleak and violent dystopian story involving the Punisher, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Deadpool, and many other major Marvel characters. That hits in May.
As far as characters I’d like to write… geez, which characters wouldn’t I want to tackle? I’ve been a Marvel fan my whole life. My favorites include the Fantastic Four, the various X-books, Thor, SHIELD, and so on. I like writing stories with espionage and political elements; but I also love big science fiction stories and character-driven tales with introspective characters.
So…I’m game for anything Marvel wants to throw at me.
