Mi hanno chiesto se fossi interessato a un fill-in di due puntate, e io ho accettato. È più o meno quello che succede sempre. Non so se il disegnatore regolare, David LaFuente, avesse bisogno di una pausa o no, ma sono contento che me l'abbiano chiesto.

Sei conosciuto per aver disegnato la serie Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane. Quali differenze hai trovato tra queste due diverse versioni del "Tessiragnatele"?

Mi hanno specificamente chiesto di renderlo più giovane. Quando sarebbe stato vestito da Spider-Man, avrei dovuto enfatizzare i suoi arti sottili con meno muscoli sul suo corpo. Oltre a quello, SMLMJ e Ultimate Spider-Man sono due mondi molto diversi in termini di personaggi e caratterizzazioni. Voglio dire, Gwen è una goth mezza punk nell'Universo Ultimate, il che è stato divertente da disegnare, quindi fondamentalmente ho fatto del mio meglio per continuare ciò che David aveva già fissato prima.

Ultimate Spider-Man ha un cast di personaggi davvero ampio. Come hai trovato il modo giusto per disegnare ciascuno di loro?

Ho solo fatto del mio meglio per ispirarmi al design di David e miscelare un po' del mio tocco, dove potevo. La Marvel è sempre stata generosa per quanto riguarda l'interpretazione artistica dei loro personaggi, e sono sempre molto flessibili nei miei confronti, cosa di cui sono molto grato.

Hai avuto qualche linea guida o istruzione dallo scrittore Brian Michael Bendis?

Non che io ricordi. Sono stato libero di svolgere la mia parte.

Stai disegnando due episodi dopo il disegnatore David LaFuente. Hai letto il suo lavoro? Il suo stile ti ha influenzato in qualche modo?

David è grandioso. Ho letto qualche episodio precedente al mio arco narrativo così da poter capire quello che stava succedendo [sulla serie], e sono stato subito catturato. Lui ha uno stile molto audace e forte, mentre il mio è un po' più morbido e più delicato, quindi ho semplicemente riempito questi due episodi con ciò che conoscevo.

Come hai provato a ritrarre personaggi in giovane età, nei tuoi disegni?

Sono abituato a ritrarre personggi giovani, quindi per me non è stato un grande sforzo, ma ho trovato che i dialoghi freschi e frizzanti di Brian aiutassero davvero nel determinare il look e i movimenti del corpo di certi personaggi nella tavola. È stato molto divertente.

Dopo questo lavoro, dove ti vedremo ancora? Quali sono i tuoi progetti?

Ho appena terminato un episodio singolo della Vedova Nera, e ho in programma la realizzazione di alcune cover per la Marvel. Ho anche qualcosa in fase di sviluppo in Giappone, quindi magari tenete d'occhio anche quello. Grazie!

Hi Takeshi! Welcome on Comicus, talking of your work on Ultimate Spider-Man! How did you end up to Ultimate Spider-Man pencils?

They asked me if I were interested in a 2 issue fill-in arc and I accepted. It's always kind of how it goes. I'm not sure if the regular artist, David LaFuente, needed a break or not but I was happy I was asked.

You're know for having drawn the Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane book. What differences did you find between this two different version of the "Webslinger"?

I was specifically asked to make him look younger. When dressed as Spider-man, I was to emphasize his thin limbs with less muscle on his body. Other than that, SMLMJ and Ultimate Spider-Man are two very different worlds in terms of characters and personalities. I mean, Gwen is a punky goth in the Ultimate Universe, which was fun to draw so, basically, I did my best to continue what David had established beforehand.

Ultimate Spider-Man has a very huge cast of character. How did you find the right way to drawn each one of them?

I just did my best to work off of David's designs and mix in some of my own touches where I was allowed. Marvel has always been generous when it comes to artistic interpretations of their characters and they are always very flexible with me which I'm very thankful for.

Did you had an guidelines or advise from the writer Brian Michael Bendis?

Not that I recall. I was free to do my thing.

You're drawing two issues after the artist David LaFuente. Did you read his work? His style affected you somehow?

David is great. I read a few issues prior to my arc in order to catch up with what was going on and was immediately hooked. He has a very bold and strong style while mine is a bit softer and more subtle, so I just stuck with what I knew for these two issues.

How did you try to portray the young age of the characters in your art?

I'm used to portraying younger characters so it wasn't much of a stretch for me but I found that Brian's snappy and fresh dialogue really helped a lot when determining the look and body movements of certain characters in a panel. It was a lot of fun.

After this book, where will we see you again? Which are your projects?

I just finished a one issue Black Widow book and plan to do some covers for Marvel. I also have something in the works in Japan so please keep an eye out for that. Thanks!
