Jeff Parker: Thunderbolts

Salve Jeff e benvenuto su Comicus per parlare con noi della tua imminente gestione dei Thunderbolts.

Per prima cosa parliamo un po' del cast della serie. Puoi presentarceli e spiegare il loro ruolo nella storia?

Scourge -  È il leader della squadra, nominato da Norman Osborn (ex-Goblin), che li guida nelle missioni. Osborn, ovviamente, decide quale sarà la missione. Scourge era conosciuto in precedenza nell’universo Marvel di Devil come il militare psicopatico Nuke, un killer con la bandiera americana tatuata sul viso.

Paladin – È un personaggio potente e un tiratore scelto che è stato un mercenario. Attualmente il programma Thunderbolts lo sta finanziando, quindi farà tutto ciò che gli dicono. La domanda è se abbia realmente una morale, o se gli si rivolterà mai contro.

Ant-Man - È Eric O’Grady, un ex agente Shield che ha rubato l’equipaggiamento dell’Ant-Man originale e ha cominciato ad atteggiarsi a supereroe. Si è un po’ redento da allora, ma gli attuali Thunderbolts hanno un’influenza corruttrice.

Headsman – Utilizza un’ascia che emana energia, vola sul vecchio aliante di Goblin, ed è quello che negli States chiamano “Hillbilly”. Viene da un background rude e credo che non capisca molto la differenza tra giusto e sbagliato.

Mr.X – È un mutante ossessionato dall’uccidere che possiede una abilità telepatica di basso livello. Riesce ad anticipare ogni mossa dell’avversario perché gli legge nel pensiero, quindi è molto difficile da combattere. È un narcisista e apprezza le cose raffinate della vita quando non uccide.

Ghost – È la figura più misteriosa. Prova un odio patologico verso le corporazioni e vive per sabotarle. Nel suo costume speciale può diventare intangibile o invisibile, quindi eccelle nella segretezza. Nessuno sa quali siano i suoi scopi.

Che tipo di dinamiche ci saranno tra i personaggi e che peso avranno i rapporti tra loro nelle storie?

Nessuno nel team sa di chi altro si può fidare, e questo è il principale problema durante ogni missione che conducono.

Che ruolo avranno i Thunderbolts originali nelle trame?

È tutto da vedere!

I Thunderbolts saranno in qualche modo coinvolti in The Siege?

Sì.

Le storie del team si sono aperte con Obama come guest star. La scena politica avrà ancora un peso nelle future storie?

Non in quel modo. Tornerà a focalizzarsi soprattutto su Osborn.

Dalle anteprime abbiamo visto che i Tbolts incroceranno presto la strada con gli Agent of Atlas. Cosa li porterà ad incontrarsi?

Gli Agent of Atlas stavano cercando di infiltrarsi nelle operazioni di Osborn, di cercare un modo per farlo crollare, ma senza miglior fortuna degli altri eroi Marvel. Alla fine hanno interrotto i rapporti con Osborn, e non gli hanno fornito tutti quegli armamenti che lui si aspettava dalla Atlas Foundation. Osborn vuol far vedere cosa succede agli ex alleati che lo ostacolano, quindi gli sguinzaglia dietro i Thunderbolts per renderlo chiaro.

Sembra che tu stia diventando specializzato nello scrivere serie ambientate negli ambienti criminali: Agent Of Atlas, The Hood e ora Tbolts. Che differenza ci sono tra questi diversi squarci sui criminali del Marvel Universe?

Prima di tutto gli Agents non sono dei veri criminali, ma hanno ereditato una rete criminale globale che stanno cercando di riformare verso il bene. Ma il risultato è che sono molto connessi col crimine. The Hood è essenzialmente il rovescio di Spider-man, un giovane uomo che non ha avuto uno Zio Ben come guida morale. E i Thunderbolts dovrebbero essere supercriminali che cercano di redimere, ma attualmente Norman Osborn li controlla, e a lui non potrebbe importare meno della redenzione.

Una volta che cominci a scrivere dal punto di vista dei criminali, scopri che tendono a finire dove la vita li spinge. Gli eroi avrebbero fatto le stesse scelte, avendo il loro stesso background? A me piace pensare di no. Mi piace mostrare che la maggior parte di questi criminali non si vedono come cattive persone, credono di stare facendo il necessario per sopravvivere. Che è quello che i cattivi reali tendono a pensare. In quel senso sono uguali.

Cosa ci puoi dire della parte grafica della serie?

Migual Sepulveda sta dando alle storie una qualità surreale che è difficile da spiegare. Ti senti sempre come se fossi in un incubo, che cattura il mood della serie molto bene!

Rick Remender, nel numero doppio che precede la tua gestione dei Thunderbolts, aveva affiancato al gruppo due eroi "tradizionali" come Power Man e Iron Fist. Questa scelta avrà ripercussioni sulla tua gestione?

Si, citiamo quell'episodio nel numero 138. Mr. X non è felice di aver perso l'opportunità di uccidere Iron Fist e questa cosa lo sta tormentando.

Una delle tematiche portanti della serie è sempre stato il processo di redenzione del villain attraverso il suo vestire i panni dell'eroe. Per questo, salvo eccezioni, molti personaggi si muovono sul confine tra "buoni" e "cattivi". Come pensi di muoverti da questo punto di vista?

C’è ancora, ma funziona in modo diverso ora perché nessuno sta incoraggiando questi Thunderbolts a diventare delle persone migliori. Sembra che alcuni stiano cominciando a d abbracciare il loro lato migliore in contrasto con le odiose figure che li circondano, come se l’avere il vero male di fianco a te svelasse che sei qualcosa di diverso.
Quindi è questo che dobbiamo aspettarci: Qualcuno del team supererà le nostre aspettative? E qualcun'altro le deluderà?

First of all let’s talk about the series cast. Can you introduce them to us, and explain their role in the story?

Scourge - Is the team leader appointed by Norman Osborn (formerly Green Goblin) who leads them on missions. Osborn of course, says what the missions will be. Scourge was known before in Marvel-Daredevil history as the military psychopath called NUKE, killer with an American flag tattoo on his face.

Paladin - Is a powerful figure and expert marksman who has always been a mercenary. Currently the Thunderbolts program is funding him, so he'll do whatever they say. The question is does he actually have morals, and will he ever act on them?

Ant-Man - Is Eric O'Grady, a former SHIELD agent who stole the original Ant-Man's equipment and started posing as a super-hero.  He's reformed some since then, but the current Thunderbolts are a corrupting influence.

Headsman - Swings an energy-emanating axe, flies around on an old Green Goblin glider, and is what we in the States would call a "hillbilly." He came from a rough background and I think he doesn't really understand the distinction between right and wrong.

Mr.X - Is a mutant obsessed with killing who has some low-level telepathic ability. He can anticipate any move an opponent is making against him because he reads it from their thoughts, so he's incredibly hard to fight. He's self-obsessed and enjoys the finer things in life when not killing people.

Ghost - is the most mysterious figure. He has a pathological hatred of corporate systems and lives to sabotage them. In his special suit he can become intangible or invisible, so he excels at stealth. No one can tell what his real agenda is.

What kind of dynamics there will be among the characters and how will their relationships affect the plot?

No one on this team knows who else they can trust, and that's the main issue in every operation they undertake.

What will be the role of the original Thunderbolts?

That remains to be seen!

Will Thunderbolts be involved in The Siege?

YES.

The team’s series started with Obama as guest star. Will the political scene have its weight in the future stories?

Not in that way. It will come back to focus on Norman Osborn more though.

From the previews we have seen that soon Tbolts will meet Agent ofAtlas. What will lead to this encounter?

The Agents of Atlas were trying to infiltrate Osborn's operation, find a way to bring him down, but having no more luck than any of the other Marvel heroes. Eventually they broke off dealings with Osborn, and didn't provide all this weaponry he expected from The Atlas Foundation. Osborn wants to show what happens when former partners cross him, so he sends his Thunderbolts after them to make it clear.

It seems that you are getting specialized in writing series set in the criminal world: Agent of Atlas, The Hood, and now Tbolts. What are the differences in these outlooks on Marvel Universe criminals?

First, the Agents aren't actually villains, but they inherited a global crime network that they're trying to reform to use for good. But they're very connected to crime as a result.  The Hood is essentially the flip side of Spider-Man, a young man who had no Uncle Ben to be a moral compass for him. And the Thunderbolts are supposed to be super criminals trying to reform, but currently Norman Osborn controls them, and he could not care less about the Reform aspect.

Once you start writing from the villains point of view, you find that they tend to end up where life put them. Would the heroes have made the same choices given the same background? I like to think that they wouldn't have. I like to show that most of these villains do not see themselves as bad people, they think they're doing what's necessary to survive. Which is the way real-life bad people tend to think. So in that way they're the same.

What can you tell us about the art of the series?

Miguel Sepulveda is giving the stories a very surreal quality that's hard to explain- you always feel a bit like you're in a nightmare, which captures the mood of the series at the moment very well!

Rick Remender, in the double-issue that comes before your run, put beside the group two traditional heroes as Power Man and Iron Fist. Will this choice affect your run?

Yes, we refer to that incident right away in issue 138. Mr. X is not happy with missing the chance to kill Iron Fist, and it's eating at him.

One of the main themes of the series has always been the redemption path of the villain through putting himself in heroes’ shoes. For this reason, many characters move on the edge between good and evil. How do you think you’re gonna handle this?

It's still there, but works differently right now because no one is encouraging any of these Thunderbolts to become better people. It seems some are starting to embrace their better selves completely in opposition to the heinous figures around them, like having real evil next to you suddenly shows that you're something different.
So that's the thing to watch for - will some of this team rise above what is expected of them? And will some get worse?
