Superman compie settant'anni. Secondo la tua opinione quali sono le caratteristiche che contraddistinguono questo storico personaggio?

Prima di tutto, Superman è stato davvero il primo supereroe. Già solo questo lo rende speciale.
Di tutti gli eroi, comunque, lui è il più nobile. Ora tendiamo a essere molto più cinici, ma l’alto livello di nobiltà di Superman esemplifica ciò a cui dovremmo aspirare nelle nostre vite individuali. Ci ricorda cosa siamo nei nostri momenti migliori.

Qual è la tua storia preferita di Superman?

Molti potrebbero supporre che sia stata “La Morte di Superman”. Ma se quella sarà sempre speciale per me, le storie singole più tranquille tendono a essere le mie preferite. Ho fatto una storia sulla guida in stato di ebbrezza in Adventures of Superman con un forte messaggio, che è davvero una delle mie favorite. Ho anche portato l’idea che Superman legga delle lettere a Natale, e che di conseguenza aiuti le persone, che è un’altra delle mie preferite. È più interessante vedere come Superman aiuta con i più comuni problemi della vita quotidiana, piuttosto che [vederlo] combattere supercattivi.

Qual è la migliore e storia del personaggio, e perché?

Mi sono sempre piaciute le Imaginary Stories che sono state fatte durante gli anni ’60. Ci permettevano di vedere sprazzi di Superman fuori dai normali contorni della sua vita. Potevamo vederlo sposare Lois, avere una famiglia, o essere cresciuto come fratello di Bruce Wayne… una quantità di idee differenti che sembravano risolversi nella verifica di chi Superman fosse veramente e cosa fosse destinato a diventare.

Qual è la versione di Superman che ti è piaciuta di più?

Mmm… Non sono molto sicuro di cosa intendi qui. Se ti riferisci ai film, direi che probabilmente è il primo film con Christopher Reeve. Se intendi i fumetti, penso ancora che il Superman di Curt Swan abbia definito al meglio il personaggio. Era sia umano che regale allo stesso tempo.

Credi che ci sia bisogno di svecchiare Superman e, se sì, quali dovrebbero essere gli elementi per aggiornarlo al nostro millennio?

Non tanto aggiornato, quanto piuttosto ripresentato. Un aggiornamento potrebbe essere un cambiamento troppo estremo. Una ripresentazione, invece, aiuta a riportare un personaggio indietro alle sue radici.

In una sola frase: chi è Superman?

Superman esemplifica ciò a cui dovremmo aspirare di essere, sia come individui che come società.

Superman makes 70. Which are, in your opinion, the elements that make this historic character so unique?

First of all, Superman was really the first superhero. That alone makes him special.
Of all heroes, however, he is the most noble. We tend to be much more cynical now but Superman's high level of nobility exemplifies what we should aspire to in our personal lives. He reminds us of what we are at our better moments.

Which is your favourite Superman story done by you and why?

Many might assume it would be the "Death of Superman". While that will always be special to me, the single issue quieter stories I did tend to be my favorites. I did a drunk driving story in Adventures Of Superman with a strong message that is a real favorite of mine. I also added the idea of Superman reading letters on Christmas Eve and then helping people as a result of that, which is a favorite. It's more interesting to see how Superman helps with the more common problems life brings than fighting supervillains.

Which is your favourite Superman story and why?

I always liked the Imaginary Stories that were frequently done during the 1960s. It allowed us to see glimpses of Superman outside the normal boundaries of his life. We got to see him marry Lois, have a family, or be raised as Bruce Wayne's brother.... any number of different ideas that seemed to result in the verification of who Superman truly is and what he was destined to become.

Which is the biggest and best revival of the character and why?

Hmm... I'm not quite sure what you mean here. If you are referring to movies I'd say it's probably the first movie with Chris Reeve. If you mean comics, I still think Curt Swan's Superman defined the character best. He was both human and regal all at once.

Do you think Superman needs to be updated for the new generations of readers?

Not updated as much as reintroduced. An update could be too much of a change. A reintroduction, however, helps take a character back to his roots.

In just one sentence, who is Superman?

Superman exemplifies that which we should aspire to be, both as individuals and as a society.
