Innanzitutto, potete illustrarci come è partito questo progetto?

Brendan Deneen: Prima di tutto, grazie per il vostro interesse. Il progetto è cominciato quando il mio co-editore, Rich Emms, è entrato in contatto con il King Features riguardo la loro proprietà su Flash Gordon. Erano aperti all’idea di una nuova versione fumettistica del personaggio e hanno invitato Rich a sottoporre loro una proposta per una nuova serie. Rich mi ha chiesto se ero interessato a partecipare, e io ho risposto che ero MOLTO interessato. Ho proposto un’idea nuova, basata fortemente sulle strisce originali di Alex Raymond, e l’abbiamo sottoposta al King Features. Dopo qualche discussione e qualche tira e molla, il King ha approvato la proposta ed eccoci qui in corsa!

Flash Gordon è stato un personaggio che per oltre 60 anni ha vissuto le sue avventure nel formato delle comic strip, poi la chiusura solo pochi anni fa. Guardandovi indietro, e sapendo quello che state per fare, sentite una certa responsabilità nel prendere in mano questa grande eredità?

Sento una grande responsabilità venire da Flash Gordon. Come hai detto, il personaggio è in giro da 75 anni, più di Batman e Superman, e ha un esercito di fan fedeli. È per questo che cerco di rimanere il più fedele possibile al concetto originale e al personaggio di Alex Raymond. Anche se sto aggiornando certi aspetti, tutte le cose che la gente ama di Flash Gordon saranno presenti nella nuova serie a fumetti.

Oltre a voi, chi altri si sta occupando del rilancio del personaggio? Immagino ci sia uno staff affiatato dietro questo progetto.

Hai perfettamente ragione. Non potrei farlo da solo. Prima di tutto, questo progetto non potrebbe esistere senza Rich Emms. È stato lui per primo ad avere l’idea di avvicinare il King, ed è stato così gentile da chiedere a me di scrivere la proposta. E poi naturalmente c’è Paul Green, la cui arte è incredibile. La sua prova su Flash e i comprimari sta già raccogliendo elogi tra i fan vecchi e nuovi. E anche il nostro editor in chief, il leggendario J.M. DeMatteis, che è stato di grande aiuto nelle sceneggiature e sulle idee generali. Infine, non avremmo potuto realizzare tutto questo senza l’ottimo lavoro del King Features e, ultimo ma non meno importante, il sig. Alex Raymond stesso.

Questa nuova serie con protagonista Flash Gordon sarà una ripartenza in piena regola per il personaggio, con nuovi comprimari oltre a quelli storici, nuovi mondi, nuovi universi, o vi atterrete all'impianto classico della serie?

Partiamo da una bozza, rimanendo però fedeli a quello che è venuto prima. L’ho chiamato scherzosamente Ultimate Flash Gordon perché prende quello che c’era prima, lo espande e modernizza. Sto inventando un paio di nuovi personaggi ma, per la maggior parte, tutti quelli che incontrerete su Mongo verranno delle strisce originali.

Come sarà strutturata la collana? Ci saranno delle lunghe saghe che coinvolgeranno Flash?

Da agosto l’albo di Flash Gordon uscirà con cadenza mensile. La prima storyline sarà di sei numeri, seguita da un annual che conterrà un certo numero di storie brevi disegnate da alcuni dei migliori artisti dell’industria. Dopodiché ho idee per molti, moltissimi altri story-arc.

A questo proposito, il King Features Syndicate avrà un certo livello di supervisione o vi è stata data carta bianca?

Il King deve approvare ogni cosa che facciamo, inclusa la storia, la sceneggiatura e i disegni, ma sono stati grandi finora. Siamo molto in sintonia, e Rich e io non avremmo potuto chiedere un partner migliore per lanciare Flash Gordon nel 21° secolo.

In termini di caratterizzazione, quale evoluzione intendete dare al personaggio? Sarà un eroe tutto d'un pezzo o ci sarà qualche nuovo aspetto che intendete affrontare e far vedere ai lettori?

Quello che mi piace del Flash delle vecchie strisce è che è sempre il tipico eroe audace, avventuroso, spericolato in contrapposizione a un più riservato Barin.
Prevedo di rendere Flash un po’ meno avventato e un pochino arrogante, ma tutto questo sarà spazzato via nel momento in cui verrà coinvolto nella guerra su Mongo e capirà di essere in una situazione molto seria e forse mortale.

Ovviamente immagino che negli albi farà la sua apparizione Ming. Se sì, anche per lui avete ideato una sorta di nuovo rilancio?

Come i vostri lettori capiranno nel momento in cui metteranno le mani su una copia di Flash Gordon n.0, il nostro Ming è molto più complesso di tutte le altre iterazioni precedenti. A dire il vero, Ming si definisce “Ming il Misericordioso” e vede i suoi tentativi di unificare le nazioni di Mongo come un’azione caritatevole. Vede Barin e gli altri ribelli come “rivoltosi” e farà tutto il necessario per salvarli da loro stessi. Ci sono evidenti parallelismi con un certo leader e una certa guerra dei nostri giorni.

Come descrivereste Flash Gordon oggi, nel 21° secolo?

Lo descriverei come una versione fedele e aggiornata di ciò che ha reso la striscia originale di Alex Raymond così grande. C’è azione, sentimento e splendore fantascientifico. Ci saranno molti personaggi e situazioni familiari - ma prometto che ogni numero sorprenderà i lettori – e naturalmente finali mozzafiato!

Il prossimo anno il personaggio taglia il traguardo dei 75 anni. Sappiamo che avete già qualche progetto in preparazione per festeggiare l'evento, come un annual. Quali dettagli in più ci potete fornire?

Come già accennato, metteremo insieme un annual composto da storie brevi illustrate dal top degli artisti del settore. Le storie analizzeranno tutti i personaggi dei primi sei numeri e anche quelli dei futuri story-arc. Credo che la gente rimarrà di stucco per quello che Rich, JM e io abbiamo in serbo per i fan di Flash di tutto il mondo.

First of all, can you describe us how the project began?

First off, thank you very much for your time. The project began when my co-publisher, Rich Emms, got in touch with King Features regarding their property Flash Gordon. They were open to the idea of a new comic book version of the character and invited Rich to submit a proposal for a new series. Rich asked me if I’d be interested in coming up with that take, and I responded that I was VERY interested. I came up with a new idea, heavily based on the original Alex Raymond comic strips, and we pitched it to King Features. After some wrangling back and forth, King approved the proposal and we were off and running!

Flash Gordon is a character that lived for more than 60 years in the comic-strip format, then closed a few years ago. Looking back, do you feel some kind of responsibility in taking in this inheritance?

I feel a great responsibility when it comes to Flash Gordon. Like you say, the character has been around for 75 years, longer than Batman or Superman, and has a legion of loyal fans. That’s why I’m staying as faithful as possible to Alex Raymond’s original concepts and characters. While I’m updating certain elements, all of the things that people love about Flash Gordon will be in our new comic book series.

Beside you, who else is working the character’s relaunch? I suppose there’s a harmonious staff behind this project.

You’re absolutely right. I couldn’t do this alone. First and foremost, this project wouldn’t exist without Rich Emms. He got the idea in the first place to approach King and was kind enough to ask me to write the proposal. And then, of course, there’s Paul Green, whose art is beyond incredible. His take on Flash and crew is already garnering praise among old and new fans alike. There’s also our Editor-In-Chief, industry legend J.M. DeMatteis, who has been very helpful when it comes to the scripts and the overall ideas. Finally, we couldn’t have done this without the fine folks at King Features and, lastly and most importantly, Mr. Alex Raymond himself.

This new series featuring Flash will be a whole new begin, with new partners, new worlds and universes or will you stick to the original pattern of the series?

As mentioned, we’re starting from scratch here while remaining true to what’s come before. I’ve jokingly been calling it Ultimate Flash Gordon because it’s taking what’s been established previously and expanding and modernizing it. I’m inventing a couple of new characters but, for the most part, everyone you meet on Mongo will be from the original comic strips.

What will be the structure of the series? Will there be long sagas?

Starting in August, the Flash Gordon comic book will be coming out on a monthly basis. The first storyline is going to be six issues long, followed by an annual which will contain a number of short stories drawn by some of the comic industry’s top artists. After that, I have ideas for many, many more story arcs.

Will the King Feature Syndicate have a supervising role or do you have full control?

King has to approve everything we do, including the story, script and art, but they have been great so far. We are all totally on the same page and Rich and I couldn’t ask for a better partner to launch Flash Gordon into the 21st century.

Talking about characterization, what kind of evolution are you going to give to Flash? Will he be a stoic hero or will there be new sides of his character you’re going to show?

What I like about the Flash from the old strips is that he’s always kind of the bold, adventurous, risk-taking hero as opposed to, say, Barin’s more reserved self. I plan on making Flash a bit reckless, a little bit cocky, but a lot of that will be stripped away as he gets involved in the war on Mongo and realizes that he’s involved in a very serious and quite deadly situation.

I suppose that Ming will show up in the comic. Is there some kind of renovation planned for him too?

As your readers will see if they get their hands on a copy of Flash Gordon #0, our Ming is much more complex than any other iteration that has come before. Ming actually calls himself “Ming the Merciful” and sees his attempts to unify the nations of Mongo as a benevolent decision. He sees Barin and the other rebels as “insurgents” and will do whatever is necessary to save them from themselves. There are obvious parallels to a certain leader and war going on right now.

How would you describe the 21st Century Flash?

I’d describe the 21st century version of Flash Gordon as a faithful and updated version of what made the original Alex Raymond comic strips so great. You’ve got action, adventure, romance and science-fiction splendor. There will be lots of familiar characters and situations, but I promise every issue will surprise people and, of course, cliffhanger endings!

Next year it will be the 75th anniversary of the character. We already know that you’ve got some project apart to celebrate the event, as an annual. Can you tell us something more?

As mentioned, we’ll be putting together an annual that features short stories illustrated by some of the comic industry’s top artists. The stories will explore all of the characters from the first six issues, as well as some characters from future arcs. I think people are going to be blown away by what Rich, JM and I have in store for Flash Gordon fans worldwide.
