Come sei entrato nel cast di Captain America? Hai affrontato un’audizione?
Sì, ho affrontato un’audizione per il ruolo di Morita. Sono stato l’ultimo attore a dare la sua lettura. Tre settimane dopo, ho affrontato un secondo incontro e successivamente mi è stato offerto il ruolo. Dal momento che lo script era segreto, hanno fatto leggere agli attori brani della sceneggiatura di Salvate il soldato Ryan. In seguito ho scoperto che anche tutti i miei colleghi sul set avevano letto lo stesso materiale nelle loro audizioni.
Ci puoi descrivere l'atmosfera sul set? Come è stato lavorare con Chris Evans, il regista Joe Johnston e il resto del cast?
L’atmosfera sul set era sempre rilassata. È un'attestazione dell’energia e dell’atteggiamento del nostro regista, Joe. Si potrebbe pensare che il regista di un film da 140 milioni di dollari sarà sotto stress, sul set. Se Joe lo era, non l’ha mai dato a vedere… ha sempre mantenuto la calma. Penso che quell’atmosfera abbia permesso a Chris di essere rilassato al punto giusto e di non preoccuparsi per il fardello di dover reggere un film grande come questo sulle sue spalle. Tutto ciò che poteva fare era stare lì e fare il proprio lavoro, ed è stato eccezionale. La risorsa principale di un attore è la tranquillità, e il set di Capitan America aveva sempre quella sorta di energia calma che ha permesso a tutti noi di fare del nostro meglio.
Jim Morita, il tuo personaggio, ha una lunga storia fumettistica alle spalle. Ti sei per caso informato leggendo i fumetti?
Da ragazzo ero un accanito lettore di fumetti, quindi sapevo già molte cose su Capitan America. Però non avevo mai sentito parlare del personaggio di Jim Morita. Sono andato su Internet e ho trovato ogni informazione esistente sul suo conto, non tantissimo a dire il vero. Ciò che ho trovato è stato comunque molto utile. Ho fatto anche un’approfondita ricerca sulla Seconda guerra mondiale, soprattutto riguardo i soldati “nisei”, i soldati nippo-americani. Volevo recuperare quante più informazioni realistiche fosse possibile su com’era un tizio simile a Jim Morita durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Sentivo che se avessi costruito per lui una base fondata sui fatti, allora avrei potuto fare in modo che il personaggio esistesse anche nel Marvel Universe, che tiene conto di molte circostanze fantasiose.
Nella tua carriera ci sono ruoli in decine di serie televisive, come 24, Hawthorne, Crossing Jordan, e anche in molti film. Quali differenze vi sono tra queste produzioni a cui hai partecipato in passato, e una pellicola su una icona come Captain America?
Ci sono ovvie differenze. La grandezza di questo film, in termini di produzione e aspettative, è maggiore di quella di qualunque altra produzione in cui io sia mai stato coinvolto. È un film supereroistico Marvel! Il budget è enorme. La produzione è enorme. Le aspettative sono enormi. C’è più agitazione intorno a un film come Capitan America che intorno alla maggior parte degli altri. Incrociando le dita, sarà uno di quei blockbuster estivi dai grandi introiti. Tutto è situato su una scala più ampia su ogni livello.
Quale è stata la sfida più impegnativa che hai dovuto affrontare durante la lavorazione di questa pellicola?
Potrei dire che il lavoro è stato impegnativo, ma per me il lavoro è la parte più soddisfacente del processo, soprattutto se è impegnativo. Potrei dire che stare lontano da casa per quattro mesi è stato impegnativo, ma era la mia prima volta in Gran Bretagna, quindi mi è sembrata più che altro una vacanza estesa con momenti di lavoro qua e là. A pensarci in prospettiva, non ho dovuto affrontare grandi sfide… a parte forse il jet lag. Mi ci è voluto un mese intero a riprendermi dal jet lag. Ok, risponderò il jet lag.
Gli Howling Commandos, di cui il tuo personaggio fa parte, sono dei militari professionisti. Prima delle riprese hai dovuto affrontare una speciale preparazione assieme agli altri membri del cast?
Certamente. Siamo arrivati una settimana prima dell’inizio delle riprese. In quella settimana, abbiamo fatto allenamenti da stunt, che erano fondamentalmente prove per specifiche sequenze d’azione presenti nel film. Abbiamo fatto anche un po’ di allenamento tattico: in che maniera ci saremmo dovuti muovere come unità, perché ci saremmo mossi in quel modo, e via dicendo. Abbiamo anche affrontato allenamenti con le armi. A ciascuno di noi è stato dato un resoconto analitico completo delle nostre armi. Siamo stati allenati a caricare le munizioni, scaricare, muoverci con le nostre armi, sparare, ecc. Questa parte dell’allenamento è stata probabilmente la più eccitante per tutte le persone coinvolte. Quando sparavamo, nell’aria c’era sempre questa sensazione palpabile sia di pericolo che di gioia pura.
Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti?
Ho un ruolo nell’imminente remake di Alba Rossa. Nel cast c’è anche un altro attore “Marvel”, Chris Hemsworth, che questo mese si può vedere in Thor. Interpreto un soldato, ancora una volta, e aiuto il protagonista a combattere i cattivi. Dovrebbe essere un altro pop-corn movie emozionante e pieno d’azione. Spero che andiate a vederlo!
How did you enter the cast of Captain America? Did you attend an audition?
Yes, I attended an audition for the role of Morita. I was the last actor to read for that role. Three weeks later, I had a second appointment and thereafter was offered the role. As the script was being kept a secret, they had actors read sides from the film, "Saving Private Ryan". I later found out that all of my fellow actors read the same material for their auditions as well.
Can you describe the atmosphere on the set? What was it like to work with Chris Evans, the director Joe Johnston and the rest of the cast?
The atmosphere on set was relaxed at all times. That is a testament to the energy and attitude of our director, Joe Johnston. One might think the director of a $140million film is going to be stressed on set. If Joe was, he never showed it...always kept his cool. I think that atmosphere allowed Chris to be as relaxed as he needed to be and not worry about the burden of carrying a huge film like this on his shoulders. He could just be there and do his job, and he was terrific. As an actor, your number one asset is relaxation, and the set always had that calm energy that allowed all of us to do our best.
Jim Morita, your character, has a long comic-book background. Did you prepare yourself reading comics?
I was a comic book fan as a kid so I already had a lot of information regarding Captain America. I had never heard of the Jim Morita character. I went online and found any existing information on him which was minimal. What I did find was helpful. I also did a lot of WWII research especially in regards to the "Nisei" soldiers, or Japanese-American soldiers. I wanted to get as much true, real-life information for a guy "like" Jim Morita fighting in WWII. I felt that if I had built a "factual" basis for him, I could then let go and permit the character to exist in the Marvel Universe which allows for a lot of imaginative circumstances.
In your career ther are several tv series, as 24, Hawthorne, Crossing Jordan, and many films as well. What differences do you find between these productions and a movie like Captain America?
There are obvious differences. The magnitude of this film, in terms of production and expectation, is bigger than any other production with my involvement. It's a Marvel superhero movie! The budget is huge. The production is huge. The expectation is huge. There is more excitement surrounding a film like Captain America than most others. It is going to be one of those tent-pole summer blockbusters, fingers crossed. Everything is on a grander scale across the board.
What has been the biggest challenge you had to face during the making if this film?
I could say the work was challenging, but for me, the work is always the most rewarding part of the process, especially if it is challenging. I could say being away from home for 4 months was challenging, but it was my first time in the UK, so it felt more like an extended vacation with pockets of work here and there. In retrospect, there were no big challenges for me...except maybe the jet lag. It took me a full month to recover from the jet lag. Okay, I'll say jet lag.
Howling Commandos, which your character in part of, are professional soldiers. Did you have to face any sort of special training with the other cast members before the shooting began?
Absolutely. We arrived about a week before our first day of shooting. During that week, we had stunt training which was basically stunt rehearsals for specific sequences in the film. We had some tactical training; how we would move as a unit, why we would move that way, etc. We also had armory training. Each of us was given a breakdown of our weapon. We were trained to load the ammo, unload, move with the weapon, fire the weapon, etc. This part of the training seemed to be the most exciting for all persons involved. There was always a palpable feeling in the air of both danger and pure joy when we were firing our weapons.
What are your future projects?
I have a role in the upcoming remake, "Red Dawn". It stars another "Marvel Comics" actor, Chris Hemsworth, who will be seen this month in "Thor". I play a soldier, once again, helping the main character fight the bad guys. It should be another action-packed, exciting, popcorn movie. I hope you go see it!
