Ci parli del personaggio di Carol così come lo vedi tu?

Adoro questo personaggio! Sento davvero tanta empatia per Carol e vorrei proprio che se la cavasse. Non dirò molto di lei perché lo script la introduce in modo splendido. Vorrei che voi lettori la conosceste incontrandola direttamente quando apparirà nel terzo episodio. Dirò solo questo: la sua vita prima di quest'apocalisse l'ha costretta a diventare una persona estremamente prudente, ed è spontaneamente premurosa, il che la rende una risorsa preziosa per questo gruppo di sopravvissuti, e sentirsi considerata è una cosa di cui ha bisogno da tempo. Come attrice, interpretare il ruolo di un personaggio talmente complesso nel tentativo di sopravvivere in un mondo così complicato è eccitante!

Il tuo è uno dei personaggi più importanti in "The Walking Dead". Come hai affrontato la sfida di interpretare una madre rimasta sola in un mondo pieno di zombi?

Fiducia, con la "F" maiuscola, ecco come. "The Walking Dead" presenta una gran serie di territori inesplorati per molti di noi. Per me interpretare Carol rappresenta recitare come parte di un gruppo e, al contempo, il mio primo ruolo ricorrente. Affrontare questa sfida è molto eccitante, ma allo stesso tempo mi intimidisce un po'! Sapevo che questo progetto era una grande impresa per chiunque ne fosse coinvolto, e che le aspettative erano molto molto alte. Per Frank Darabont assegnarmi questa parte significava credere in me… molto. È quella stessa fiducia ad alimentare la mia determinazione nell'affrontare questa sfida. Ognuno di noi è qui perché qualcuno ha avuto fiducia di lui, e per questa grande sfida ha portato grande rispetto e supporto reciproco all'interno del cast e dello staff. Gale Anne Hurd è qui ogni giorno per lavorare su questa magia e per rassicurare tutti durante il suo sviluppo. "Tutti per uno e uno per tutti". Questa è l'atmosfera che si respira qui attorno. Ognuno tiene d'occhio il lavoro dell'altro per riuscire nella sfida più grande che tutti condividamo. Molto gratificante.

Hai mai letto il fumetto di The Walking Dead? Se sì, come sono state rese, a tuo parere, le atmosfere del comic book?

Si, ho letto i fumetti di Robert Kirkman, anche se non tutti. La sua serie mi ha veramente colpita! Niente sciocchezze, niente riempitivi, niente gore fine a se stesso. Mi ha attirata in queste circostanze orrorifiche per il suo riuscire a mantenere una tale sostanza umana per tutto il tempo. Potevo rapportarmi ai suoi personaggi e alle loro paure in modo assolutamente reale. Ogni cosa che influenzasse quella paura è stata adattata in maniera davvero realistica. Gli zombi, ovviamente, sono SPLATTRacolari! Ho un'alta tolleranza per il gore, ma vedere gli zombi creati appositamente da Greg Nicotero mi ha fatto ricredere. Sono realmente favolosi. Anche da vicino mi è difficile dire dove finisca la vera pelle e dove inizi il trucco. Semplicemente disgustoso. Ogni dettaglio delle atmosfere sembra molto reale. Le location sono perfette e giravamo esposti alle intemperie (non aspettatevi la neve in questa stagione, comunque). Una vera città, oscura e decadente, si profila in lontananza attraverso la vera foschia di un'ondata di calore, dalla vista di un vero accampamento in un vero bosco – ma questa è solo una location. Ce ne sono molte altre ed è tutto lì, nei suoi vividi dettagli. Non penso che qualcuno, del cast o della troupe, sia scampato da qualche vero graffio o bruciatura.

Abbiamo già intervistato Madison Lintz, che nel telefilm interpreta tua figlia. Com'è stato lavorare con lei?

È stata una gioia lavorare con Madison Lintz! La conosco da anni grazie al mio lavoro come commercial casting director. È una cosa preziosa, per me, essere finite a recitare assieme e a condividere questa esperienza fenomenale. Da quello che ho potuto vedere la sua crescita nel mondo reale e quel poco di famigliarità che avevamo è stato un grande bonus. La adoro nel ruolo di Sophia. Non è solo una giovane attrice di talento e con solide basi, ha anche un fantastico senso dell'umorismo. Un sacco di risate e divertimento!

Nel fumetto, Carol è molto legata al personaggio di Tyreese. Questo personaggio nel telefilm sembra non esserci… almeno da quanto riportato da www.imdb.com. Confermi questa notizia o semplicemente il personaggio esiste ed è cambiato, magari diventando T-Dog?

Non posso confermarlo. Ognuno dovrà sintonizzarsi!

Hai partecipato a 4 dei sei episodi che compongono la prima serie. Cosa contraddistingue, secondo te, questa serie dalle numerose altre a cui hai partecipato?

Ogni cosa di questa serie TV è diversa rispetto a qualsiasi altra serie a cui ho preso parte. È una domanda trabocchetto, vero? Davvero, è diversa da qualsiasi cosa che sia mai stata prodotta per la televisione. Il calibro e il livello della sola produzione sono semplicemente spettacolari e più paragonabili a quelle di un lungometraggio… di un blockbuster. Abbiate. Pazienza!

Pur uscendo ad Halloween, "The Walking Dead" è già un successo annunciato, tanto che è stata già confermata la seconda stagione, prima ancora di aver visto la prima. In un periodo come quello attuale, dove sono molte le serie a chiudere, perché "The Walking Dead" è l'eccezione che conferma la regola?

Quelli erano rumor, mai confermati dall'AMC. La serie non è ancora stata rinnovata per una seconda stagione.

I fan del fumetto aspettano trepidamente la messa in onda, anche qui in Italia. Uno dei timori, però, è che le scene crude del fumetto siano edulcorati per non precludersi una certa fascia di pubblico. Come puoi tranquillizzare i fan a tal proposito?

Nel profondo, "The Walking Dead" è una serie drammatica sulla sopravvivenza umana, presentata con così tanto realismo come se fosse possibile, nessuna eccezione. Detto questo, il lordume e le interiora sono quel che sono. Ewwwwwww! Non posso aspettare!

Can you talk us about your personal view of Carol?

I love this character! l feel so much empathy for Carol and really want to see her to pull through this.  I'm not going to say too much about her right now because the script does such a brilliant job introducing her. I really want your readers to get to know her by meeting her on her own turf when she appears in the third episode. I will say this much: Her life before the apocalypse forced her to become a highly cautious person, and she's a genuine care-giver which can make her a valuable asset to this group of survivors, and feeling valued is something she's been needing for a long time. As an actor, playing such a complex character trying to survive this highly complicated world is thrilling!

You play the role of one of the most important characters of The Walking Dead. How did you face the challenge to play a mother who's remained alone in a world full of zombies?

Trust, with a capital "T", that's how.  The Walking Dead presented a lot of new territory for many of us. For me, playing the role of Carol presented my first time acting as part of an ensemble as well as my first recurring role. That I even got to face this challenge is hugely exciting, but also pretty daunting!  I knew what a big undertaking this project was going to be for everyone involved and I knew the expectations were very, very high. For Frank Darabont to give me this role obviously meant that he trusted me... a lot.  And that trust fuels my determination to meet the challenge. Everyone is here because someone trusted them and there's an enormous amount of mutual respect and support among the cast and crew for what each is being challenged to do. Gale Anne Hurd is here every day working her own magic and giving lots of reassurance in the process. "All for one and one for all."  That's really the sense one gets around here. Everyone's looking out for one another to succeed the greater challenge that we all share. Very gratifying.

Have you ever read The Walking Dead's comic books? If so, what's your opinion about the adaptation of the atmospheres of the comic book?

Yes, I have read Robert Kirkman's comic books, though not all of them. His books blew me away! No fluff, no filler, no gore for the sake of gore. He lured me into these horrifying fictional circumstances because he manages to maintain such real human substance throughout. I could relate to his characters, and to their fear, in a very real way. Everything influencing that fear is being adapted so realistically. The zombies, of course, are GOREgeous! I have a high tolerance for gore, but seeing the zombies that Greg Nicotero is creating for this really has me second-guessing myself. They are truly horrifying. Even up close I can't tell where the real skin ends and the makeup begins. Just disgusting. Everything about the atmospheres looks and feels very real. The locations are perfect and we're shooting in the elements (don't expect any snow this season, however). A real cityscape, dark and decaying, looms in the distance through the real haze of a real heat wave from the view of a real campsite in some real woods - but, that's just one location. There's lots more and it's all there in very vivid detail. I don't think anyone, cast or crew, has escaped without some real scrapes and bruises.

We've already interviewed Madison Lintz, that plays the role of your daughter in the TV series. How's it been working with her?

It's been a joy working along side Madison Lintz! I'd been acquainted with her for years through my work as a commercial casting director. It's personally quite precious to me that we'd end up acting together and sharing this phenomenal experience. To the extent that I've been able to witness her growing up in real life and that we had that bit of familiarity previously is a great bonus. I adore her in the role of Sophia.  Not only is she a very grounded, very talented young actor, she's also got a fantastic sense of humor. Lots of laughter and playfulness!

In the comic book Carol is very connected to Tyreese. This character seems to be absent in the TV series... at least according to www.imdb.com. Will you confirm this, or the character is present but it has been changed, maybe becoming T-Dog?

Can't confirm this. Everyone will have to tune in!

You took part in four of the six episodes of the first season. What's the difference, in your opinion, between this and the other TV series you took part in?

Everything about this TV series is different from any series work I've taken part in. This is a trick question, right?  Seriously, this is unlike anything that's been produced for television, ever. The calibre and scale of the production alone are truly amazing and more comparable to that of a feature film... a blockbuster at that.  Just. You. Wait!

Even if it's coming out on Halloween The Walking Dead it's already a success, so that the second season has been already announced although the first one hasn't already been aired. Nowadays, while lots of TV series have been shut down, why is it the exception that proves the rule?

Those were rumors, never confirmed by AMC. The series has not yet been renewed for a second season.

The comic book's fans are waiting anxious for the airing, even here in Italy. However one of their fears is that the gross scenes from the comic book could be edulcorated, not to exclude a certain range of audience. How can you calm down the fans about that?

At it's heart The Walking Dead series is a drama about human survival, presented with as much realism as is absolutely possible, no exceptions.  That being said, gross is what it is and entrails are what they are.  Eeeewwww! I can't wait!
