Puoi descriverci, senza anticiparci troppo, il personaggio che interpreti in "The Walking Dead"?
Appaio in 5 dei 6 episodi della serie. L'episodio pilota si concentra su Rick Grimes (interpretato da Andrew Lincoln) che svegliatosi da un coma scopre che il suo mondo è ora infestato dagli zombie. Incontra un gruppo di sopravvissuti nel secondo episodio ed il mio personaggio è uno di loro.
Il fatto che il tuo personaggio non appaia nei fumetti e sia stato creato appositamente per questa serie, ti ha semplificato le cose per come strutturarlo caratterialmente oppure no?
Frank Darabont, il genio creativo dietro il personaggio di Jaqui, è stato molto generoso: mi ha scelto per la parte e mi ha coinvolto nella sua ideazione permettendomi di aiutarlo a plasmarla. È stata una bella esperienza. … Leggendo lo script ho cercato di capire il motivo per cui Jaqui si trovasse coinvolta nelle vicenda, per quale motivo fosse lì. Ci è stato possibile essere molto creativi perché Frank ed il regista non hanno mai insistito nel farci seguire passo passo il fumetto. Per questo la serie potrà piacere sia agli appassionati dell'opera di Robert Kirkman che a coloro che non l'hanno letta.
Avendo lavorato con più registi per gli episodi di questa serie, ci puoi dire quali differenze vi erano tra di loro e quali indicazioni ognuno dava agli attori del cast?
Sono stati tutti molto bravi e gentili, grazie a questo noi tutti arrivavamo sul set pronti per girare. Devo dire che come donna, e come afro-americana, sono stata colpita dalle diversità tra i vari registi. Altrettanto lo sono stata come attrice, ognuno di loro ha portato sul set la propria visione arricchendo lo show. Consigli? Ognuno di loro voleva che sembrassimo il più reali possibile e che agissimo d'istinto. Ci facevano bere molta acqua per evitare affaticamenti perché la temperatura ad Atlanta era di 40° C.
Come è stato il rapporto con il resto del cast? Hai già lavorato in film horror come “The Skeleton Key” o “Vacancy 2”. Hai trovato differenze tra l’approccio all’horror cinematografico e televisivo?
Me la sono spassata! Andrew, Laurie Holden, Sarah Wayne Calles, Jeffrey DeMunn, Steven Yuen e Jon Bernthal hanno davvero stabilito il tono perfetto come attori principali dello show. Abbiamo lavorato bene insieme, e siamo stati disposti a recitare anche nel caldo torrido! La differenza dal lavoro sui film che ho fatto è che "The Walking Dead" è davvero un insieme di pezzi. Certo, la pellicola è collaborativa, ma nei film che ho fatto non ho mai nemmeno incontrato alcuni dei membri del cast. Le nostre giornate di lavoro sono state diverse. "The Walking Dead" si occupa così tanto con la pressione dello stress e la paura giorno per giorno e l'interazione umana, e questo cambia molte dinamiche del dramma. Ci si sentiva come una famiglia, alcuni giorni, e come una famiglia disfunzionale altri. È stato intenso!
Quando hai fatto il provino, il personaggio di Jaqui già esisteva? È quello il personaggio per cui hai fatto il provino e se sì perché?
Io non so come produttori, i direttori del casting e i registi riescano a farlo! C'è una magia speciale nel grande casting, e non ho mai indovinato quale sia. Credo che questo show sia stato assemblato perfettamente. Ho uno zio saggio che recita, e dice: "Se non hai avuto la parte vuol dire che non era la tua parte". Senza troppa ansia e senza ripensamenti.
Sei già apparsa in moltissime altre serie televisive nei ruoli più disparati. Per te cosa differenzia “The Walking Dead“ dal resto… oltre al fatto che ci sono migliaia di zombie?
Credetemi. Non avete mai visto niente di simile a "The Walking Dead" in televisione. Ho avuto il privilegio di lavorare su alcuni grandi progetti con i loro meriti. Ma questo dramma, questo affascinante viaggio umano è senza precedenti nella storia della televisione. Gli appassionati di zombie saranno sorpresi, e gli appassionati del dramma saranno sorpresi. Le storie, le immagini, le prime emozioni, non vedo l'ora che tutti lo vedano!
Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti?
"Bolden!". I produttori Dan Pritzker e Wynton Marsalis stanno attualmente girando un film muto, "Louis" (riferito a Louis Armstrong) con musiche della Wynton's Orchestra per ricordare al mondo il periodo in cui furono create le fondamenta musicali del jazz. Il film (non muto) "Bolden!" dovrebbe essere pronto per il 2011, e unisce mito e storia per raccontare al mondo la storia di Buddy Bolden, il re della cornetta (un tipo di tromba) e fondatore del jazz. Io interpreto Felicity, la madre protettiva di una meravigliosa e vulnerabile ragazza che è in pericolo. La visione di Pritzker e l'apporto musicale di Marzalis sono entrambe meravigliose.

How many times did you work on the movie?
I appear in five episodes of the six-episode season of “The Walking Dead.” The pilot focuses on Rick Grimes, played by the phenomenal actor Andrew Lincoln, who emerges from a coma to discover that his world is overrun with zombies! He meets a group of survivors in episode two, and I’m part of the group.
Your character has been created specifically for this show, have you encountered difficulties in not having a model to refer to or, on the contrary, have you appreciated this freedom?
Frank Darabont – the creative genius behind Jacqui – has been so generous. He placed this remarkable woman in my hands, and he has allowed me to help shape her. What a gift. Of course, I trusted him too. His track record is unbelievable – Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile, The Mist – and I believed that he gave me everything I needed to bring the character to life. Starting with the script, I just worked toward finding Jacqui’s truth in the extraordinary circumstances of “The Walking Dead.” I think we all felt rather free creatively because Frank and the directors never insisted that we adhere strictly to any single interpretation of the comics. That’s why the series will be exciting to people who are fans of Kirkman’s work and to people who don’t know the comics.
Having worked with different directors for each episode can you tell us the differences in their approach and in the advice they would give to the actors?
These are the directors actors dream about! They were all quite wonderful, and we all came to work ready to play. I must say as a woman and as an African American, I was so impressed with the diversity of directors. As an actress, I was equally impressed with the diversity of visions and creative approaches the directors brought to the set. Advice? I think they all wanted us to keep it real and trust our instincts. They wanted us to drink lots of water and avoid fainting because the temperature was 107 degrees in Atlanta!
How has it been working on this show? Having already worked on horror movies like “The Skeleton Key” or “Vacancy 2” could you describe the different approach of a tv horror show ?
I had a blast. Andrew, Laurie Holden, Sarah Wayne Calles, Jeffrey DeMunn, Steven Yuen and Jon Bernthal really set the perfect tone as the lead actors in the show. We all worked well together, and we were willing to play even in the searing heat! The difference from the film work I’ve done is that “The Walking Dead” is truly an ensemble piece. Sure, film is collaborative, but in the films I’ve done, I never even met some of the cast members. Our work days were different. “The Walking Dead” deals so much with the pressures of stress and fear on day-to-day human interaction, and that changing dynamic drives much of the drama. It felt like a family some days, a dysfunctional family other days. It was intense!
When you participated at the casting you had been auditioning for the role of Jaqui? It was your choice or, for you, no matter which character would have been ok?
I don’t know how producers, casting directors, and directors do it! There is a special magic to great casting, and I’d never second guess it. I think this show is cast perfectly. I have a wise uncle who acts, and he says, “if you didn’t get the part it wasn’t your part.” No agonizing and second guessing.
You’ve already appeared in various tv series playing the most different roles. In your opinion what is so different in “the Walking Dead”… apart from the thousands of zombies appearing in each episode?
Believe me. You have never seen anything like “The Walking Dead” on television. I have had the privilege of working on some great projects with their own merits. But this drama, this fascinating human journey is unparalleled in television history. Zombie fans will be surprised, and drama fans will be surprised. The stories, the visuals, the raw emotion – I can’t wait for everybody to see it!
You’re already working on other projects? If yes what can you tell us?
Yes – "Bolden!" Producers Dan Pritzker and Wynton Marsalis are currently touring a silent film, “Louis” (referring to Louis Armstrong), accompanied by Wynton’s orchestra to remind the world to the time period and the musical foundations of jazz. The feature film (not a silent) "Bolden!" should be ready in 2011, and it blends myth and history to tell the world about Buddy Bolden, the Cornet king and founder of Jazz. I’m Felicity, the protective mother of a beautiful, vulnerable young woman who is in danger. Pritzker’s vision and Marsalis’s music complement each other beautifully.
