Bobby, benvenuto su Comicus. Iniziamo con una domanda classica: come ti sei ritrovato coinvolto in questo progetto?

Innanzitutto, grazie per l'ospitalità: sono da sempre un fan di molti diversi aspetti della cultura italiana!
Ho lavorato con James Cawley su "Star Trek, Phase 2". Un giorno ero al computer quando ho ricevuto una sua telefonata. Mi ha chiesto "Cosa sai su Buck Rogers?"… e io ho risposto "Era come il vecchio Flash Gordon, giusto?". In realtà non ne sapevo molto di Buck allora. Infatti quando mi ha contattato per lavorare su "Star Trek", sapevo pochissimo della serie originale, ed è da quel momento che ho iniziato a fare delle ricerche. Mi disse di "fare i compiti a casa" perché avrebbe potuto ottenere i diritti per uno show basato sul Buck originale. Tutto questo è successo circa due anni fa; James sembrava sapere perfettamente il tipo di Buck Rogers che voleva ottenere, e abbiamo iniziato a parlarne. Mi ritengo fortunato del fatto che vide subito in me un interprete adatto per quel personaggio.

Come ti sei preparato per la recitazione e per l'approccio con questo personaggio?

Beh, avevo visto tutto il gran lavoro che Gil Gerard aveva fatto, così come, ovviamente, Buster Crabbe nelle 12 vecchie parti, e ho davvero iniziato ad appassionarmi ai serial e ai fumetti degli ultimi anni '30 e '40.
Si tratta di un Buck più giovane, appartenente al primo dopoguerra. Naturalmente l'eroe è lui. Sicuro di sé, amante dell'avventura, affascinante, ma allo stesso tempo, a causa della sua giovane età, pronto a mettere alla prova se stesso. Completamente capace di maneggiare i suoi incarichi, non perde mai però il suo fascino bambinesco, ed il suo entusiasmo per l'avventura e la vita.
Quindi il personaggio proviene da un contesto diverso in America rispetto al Buck di Gil Gerard nel serial televisivo del '79. Ho fatto molte ricerche sulla Prima Guerra Mondiale a quel tempo. Il modo di parlare, il personaggio in sé, lo stile di vita, le speranze e le paure di un giovane ragazzo durante la svolta storica americana del secolo. A volte ho la sensazione di essere come Luke Skywalker nella scena in cui è nella fattoria e guarda all'orizzonte e al tramonto, quasi come a sapere che il suo destino e la sua avventura sono lì fuori, da qualche parte.
Devo menzionare il talentuoso attore Morgan Shepard, che mi ha dato molte dritte per questo progetto. Morgan è certamente un attore eccezionale, ma è anche molto preparato riguardo la Prima e la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Infatti suo padre era un pilota durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale.
Il tutto ha funzionato benissimo. Io e James avevamo incontrato Morgan ad una conferenza in Florida, e lui ci è sembrato subito interessato a lavorare sul personaggio con me. Inoltre, quando si ha il grande Gil Gerard accanto… Insomma, è Gil Gerard: se io ho una domanda, lui ne ha la risposta.

Buck Rogers è, come Capitan America, un uomo fuori dal tempo. Questo lato del suo carattere è visibile in questa serie? E se sì, come?

Sì, Buck è il tipico "pesce fuor d'acqua". E questo porta a parecchi momenti umoristici e creativi. Una delle cose che volevamo esplorare era la tragedia del perdere tutto ciò che si ha. È un giovane ragazzo di ritorno da una guerra che cerca di mettere insieme tutti i pezzi, e poi all'improvviso ogni cosa gli viene portata via. Per questo io e James sentivamo che c'era molta drammaticità, e l'opportunità di trattare davvero questo aspetto in questa serie.
In futuro, Buck naturalmente non perde il suo talento o la sua passione per il volo, ma avrà bisogno di un po' d'aiuto con tutta questa nuova tecnologia. Ed insieme al nostro iniziale concept vogliamo trattare anche questo. Comunque, una volta che Buck ed il pubblico scoprono e capiscono tutto questo, possiamo iniziare a divertirci! E, sotto certi punti di vista, Buck ed il pubblico imparano insieme. Questo è un Buck Rogers divertente, ossia un branco di jet, armi, disintegratori… uno stile rétro, con aggiunta della fantascienza steampunk.
Inoltre, Buck proviene da un'epoca in cui si è molto direttamente a contatto con tutto ciò che si fa. Non c'erano computer, telefoni, viaggi nello spazio. Bisognava sapere come aggiustare gli attrezzi della fattoria o di casa, nella Pennsilvania rurale del 1918. Ed essendo un soldato, Buck conosce le sue armi e il suo aereo completamente. In futuro, Buck avrà la capacità di produrre idee valide perché ha questo talento e un diverso sistema mentale di problem solving.
Potrei mostrare a mio nonno come collegarsi ad internet, ma non andrebbe molto lontano; nonostante questo, riuscirebbe a riparare il vecchio furgone che c'è in garage, mentre io non saprei assolutamente farlo.

Sappiamo che il regista dell'episodio pilota è Fred Olen Ray: com'è stato lavorare con lui? Quali sono state le tue impressioni?

Adoro Fred Olen Ray, e questa è stata una scelta azzeccata. Ragion per cui io, Gil ed Erin abbiamo già lavorato in passato con Fred su altri progetti. Per questo lo conosciamo tutti abbastanza bene. Fred è un regista che può rendere tutto possibile. È un ammiratore della serie e del suo genere, ed era entusiasta di essere coinvolto in questo progetto. So che lui e Gil sono anche buoni amici.
Fred è una persona fantastica, e con lui vado molto d'accordo.
C'erano molti posti che gli piacevano mentre giravamo l'episodio pilota, e riusciva sempre a trovare dei modi per girare lì.
È un regista molto bravo, e gli piace quello che fa, traducendo bene questa cosa nei risultati che ottiene. Diverse volte dopo aver girato, abbiamo sorseggiato della vodka e mentre lui fumava il suo sigaro, abbiamo parlato e discusso di film, o della vita in generale. È un piacere averci a che fare.

Potresti parlarci degli altri membri del cast? In particolare del grande Gil Gerard?

Io e Gil abbiamo trascorso molto tempo insieme. Mi ha subito preso gentilmente sotto la sua ala. Prima che iniziassimo a girare, mi ha preso in disparte dandomi tutti i consigli possibili, dicendomi che era felice di aiutarmi durante questo passaggio del testimone per il suo personaggio.
Un uomo molto simpatico, che adora divertirsi. Ma Gil era anche molto pignolo, voleva che ottenessimo il miglior prodotto possibile; è un uomo a cui piace essere coinvolto, aiutare.
Io e Gil ci siamo presi del tempo per parlare delle scene, e dei risultati che volevamo realizzare. È stato molto bravo nel trovare momenti insieme in cui potevamo approfondire ed accrescere questa esperienza.
 
Dal primo, breve teaser trailer, questo serial sembrava avere uno stile classico, molto fedele al Buck Rogers originale. Cosa ci aspetta?

È vero, il trailer è molto bello! Beh, noi saremo fedeli a quello stile. Anche se è un trailer breve, riesce a trasmettere abbastanza bene le sensazioni ed il "mondo" in cui ci eravamo calati. È un tipo di fantascienza rétro, con delle venature moderne. Credo che la gente sia affamata di quello stile e di quel look. È sicuramente qualcosa che ha resistito all'azione del tempo, e credo che le persone lo vogliano vedere di nuovo. Personalmente, lo adoro. Sono un po' stanco di vedere Hollywood che modernizza tutto così tanto; quando guardi qualcosa, in qualche modo poi perde la sua magia.
I razzi e le armi vecchio stile avevano tutti questo tipo di fascino. Un prodotto di quel tempo, dove tutto era "atomico" e poi "nucleare". Alcune di quelle cose funzionavano automaticamente, senza doversi spiegare, perché erano fatte per puro divertimento. Quello che stiamo mettendo insieme è un cast più giovane, in un'ambientazione retrò, con una grafica cool. Sono riuscito a spiegarmi? [ride] Ho bisogno di caffé!

Nei fumetti, il personaggio ha una grande nemesi, Killer Kane. Chi sono i cattivi in questo web-serial?

Avremo sicuramente un Killer Kane ed Ardala. Degli antagonisti fantastici, sexy, cattivi, corrotti, ambigui! Penserei più a Smallville che ad altro. Questo ci lascia giocare con la flessibilità dei personaggi e con diverse dinamiche. Ma non credo di poter dire di più al momento, probabilmente sono già nei guai per quanto ho detto! Comunque, piuttosto che avere questi personaggi in un solo episodio molto spesso, il piano è di averli più come personaggi ricorrenti.

Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?

Al momento sto lavorando su Buck e facendo delle audizioni. Ho partecipato ad un paio di progetti diversi, ed ora aspetto semplicemente che il prossimo arrivi. Di recente ho ricevuto un paio di buone offerte per dei film, e vi terrò aggiornati. Prossimamente dovrebbero anche uscire più episodi di "Star Trek Phase 2". Bobby, welcome on Comicus. Let's start with a classical question: how did you get involved in this project?

First of all thank you for having me; I have been a long time fan of many different aspects of Italy! I worked with James Cawley on Star Trek Phase 2.  One day I was sitting at my computer and got a phone call. He asked me: "What do you know about Buck Rogers?", I said: "Like the old Flash Gordon right"?. I did not know to much about Buck at the time. Actually when he contacted me about doing Star Trek I had very little knowledge of the Original Trek.  So you start your research. He told me to start doing my homework because he might be getting rights to do a show based on the original Buck. That was probably almost two years ago.  James seemed to know right away the kind of Buck Rogers he wanted to do, and we started talking. I am fortunate that he saw me in the role immediately.

How was your preparation about the bare acting part and the approach to your character?

Well, I had seen all the great work Gil Gerard had done, of course Buster Crabbe in the old 12 parters, and really got into the serials and comics of the late 30's and 40's. It is a younger Buck, World War 1 era.  Of course he is the hero. Confident, bold, charming but also as a result of his age really ready to prove himself. Fully capable of the task at hand, yet Buck never loses his child-like fascination and joy in adventure and life.
So the character comes from a very different time in America than Gil Gerrards Buck was in the 79 television show. I did a lot of WW1 research and study of that time.  Speech, character, way of life, hopes, fears of a young kid in the turn of the century America.  Sometimes I would get that feeling of Luke Skywalker on the farm looking out at the horizon and the setting suns. In the sense of knowing your destiny and adventure lies out there somewhere.
I must credit the very talented actor Morgan Sheppard who coached me on this project. Morgan is obviously an exceptional actor, but also very knowledgeable about the First and Second World War. In fact, his father was a pilot in the First World War. It really worked out well.  James and I had met Morgan at a convention in Florida, and he was very interested in working on the character with me.
Also when you have the great Gil Gerrard around... Hey man, he is Gil Gerrard: I got a question, he has got the answer. 

Buck Rogers is, like Captain America, a man out of time. Is this side of the character visible in this series? And if so, how?

Yes Buck is the typical 'fish out of water'. And it leads to a lot of humorous and inventive moments. One of the things we wanted to explore was the tragedy of losing everything you have. It is a kid coming back from war, getting things together, and then suddenly all is taken from him. So James and I felt there was great drama there and opportunity to really explore that aspect in this series.
In the future, Buck obviously does not lose his talent or passion for flying, but he is going to need a little help with all this new technology. And within our concept we really want to explore that. However; once Buck and the audience figure all this cool stuff out we can have fun! And, in part, it is Buck and the audience learning together. This is a fun Buck Rogers. Meaning jet packs, blasters, disintegrators... really retro style and steam punk sci-fi.
In addition, Buck comes from a time where you are very hands on with everything you do. There were no computers, phones, space travel. You had better be savvy with fixing household/ or farm equipment in rural 1918 Pennsilvania. And as a soldier Buck knows his weaponry and plane inside and out. In the future Buck has the ability to help and generate ideas in part because he has these skills and really a different way of problem solving. I can show my Grandfather how to get online but he would not get very far at first, but then again he could fix the old truck in the garage and I would know a thing about it.

We know that the director of the pilot was Fred Olen Ray; how was it working with Fred? Which were your impressions?

I love Fred Olen Ray and this was a great choice. Reason being both Gil, Erin, and I had worked on various projects with Fred in the past.  So we all know him pretty well. Fred is a director who can get it done. He is a fan of the series and of the genre and was excited about getting involved in this project. I know that he and Gil are pretty good friends too.
Fred is a cool character and we get along well. There were many places while filming the pilot he loved and came up with ways we could film there. He is a clever director and really enjoys what he does, and it translates well. Couple different times after the shot we would sip vodka and he would have his cigar and we would just talk film and life. He is a pleasure to be around.

Could you tell us something about the other members of the cast? In particular, about the great Gil Gerard?

Gil and I spent a lot of time together. He quickly and kindly took me under his wing. Before we started shooting he took me aside and gave me all the advice he could, and that he was happy to help pass on the character. A very funny guy, loves to joke around. But Gil was very adamant about getting the best product we could, he is a guy wants to get involved, wants to help. Gil and I would take time and talk about the scene and what we wanted to accomplish. He was very good at finding moments together we could deepen and strengthen.

Since the first, brief teaser trailer, this serial seemed to have a classic style, very faithful to the original Buck Rogers. What are we to expect?

Yes, the trailer looks cool! Well, we are staying true to that style. Although it is a short trailer it sets up the feel and "world" were playing in pretty well. It is a retro kind of science fiction with a modern update. I think people are hungry for that look and style. It is something that has stood the test of time for sure, and I think people want to see agian. Personally I love it. I am a bit sick of Hollywood "modernizing" everything so much. Then you watch it and it sort of looses its magic. The old style rockets and blasters all had this sort of charm. A product of its time everything was "atomic" and then "nuclear". Some of it just worked and did not have explain itself because that was just for fun. We are sticking with a younger cast in a retro environment with cool graphics. Did that make any sense? Ha. I need coffee!

In the comics, the character has a memorable nemesis, Killer Kane. Who are the villains in this web-serial?

Will we definitely have a Killer Kane and Ardala. Cool, sexy, mean, twisted, back stabbing villains! I would think more smallvile than anything else. It lets us play with have some flexiblitly and different dynamics with all the characters. But I don't think I can say more at this moment, I'm probably already in trouble! But instead of these people being in an episode every so often, the plan is to have them more recurring characters.

Which are your future projects?

Currently I am working on Buck and auditioning. Been up for a couple different projects and just waiting on the next one to come around. Had a couple cool offers for films recently and will keep you posted. There should be more Star Trek Phase 2 episodes coming out as well in the near future.
