Partiamo dalle domande di rito. Come sei stato coinvolto in “Watchmen”? Conoscevi già il graphic novel?

Sono stato così fortunato da essere stato richiesto dalla direttrice del casting canadese per essere il suo “lettore” – il che significa che leggevo le battute fuori inquadratura per chiunque stesse facendo audizioni per lei. È stata una grande esperienza e mi ha dato l’opportunità di incontrare Zack Snyder. Al termine del lavoro di “lettore”, Zack mi ha offerto la parte di Dollar Bill perché sentiva che la mia taglia, il mio aspetto ed il mio comportamento erano adatti al personaggio! Camminavo ad un palmo da terra! Ero conscio dell’esistenza del graphic novel, visto che molti miei amici l’avevano già letto, ma io non l’ho mai fatto prima di essere coinvolto nel progetto.

Ci sono differenze tra il Dollar Bill del fumetto e quello che tu porterai sullo schermo?

Non appaio così a lungo nello schermo da poter dire molto del carattere del personaggio, eccetto che è un uomo qualunque con una forte fibra morale.

Pur non essendo molto presente, nel fumetto, Dollar Bill rappresenta in pieno l’ingenuità originaria dei supereroi, e la sua fine ne è un esempio lampante. Questa ingenuità è resa nel tuo personaggio?

Moltissimo! Ad esempio nel costume fatto in casa e nell’incrollabile desiderio di portare la giustizia dove non esiste anche senza i mezzi per farlo! Amo l’oppresso che cerca così tanto di cambiare qualcosa da essere disposto a rischiare tutto senza essere pienamente conscio delle possibili ripercussioni.

Che sensazione dà vestirsi da supereroe, con tutti quei colori sgargianti, stivaloni e via dicendo? Ci si sente ridicoli? Potenti? Il costume crea una specie di atmosfera irreale? E, se capisci a cosa mi riferisco, quanto è scomodo il mantello?
 
Zack e la sua banda sono stati sorprendenti nel creare questa realtà alternativa per gli attori! I costumi e i set erano spettacolari! E ammettiamolo: vestirsi come un supereroe è il sogno di bambino che diventa realtà! E non stiamo più parlando del lenzuolo del letto e di un paio di calzini rossi, questo è un costume fatto su misura, specifico e professionale! Ok, forse è stato un po’ tardivo realizzare quel sogno a trent’anni, ma mi sono divertito un mondo malgrado ciò. La qualità con la quale le cose sono state fatte ha indubbiamente creato un’atmosfera irreale. Non mi sono sentito per nulla ridicolo… o potente. Forse mi sono sentito moralmente obbligato a fare la cosa giusta sia per il personaggio che per la produzione, il che può essere facilmente convertito nel fare il dovere di Dollar Bill con la stessa integrità.

Sappiamo che avete girato anche un cinegiornale ispirato a “Under The Hood”, l’autobiografia di Hollis Mason, la quale verrà inclusa nel DVD. Immaginiamo che qui i personaggi degli anni ’40 siano stati maggiormente approfonditi. Cosa ci puoi dire al riguardo?

Non sono sicuro di poter dire più di tanto! È stato fatto durante la produzione e mi sono perso parecchio del girato. Quello che ho visto sembrava avere un azzeccato “sense of humor”, e anche io non vedo l’ora di vederlo!

A parte il documentario, nel film ci sono molte scene negli anni ’40? Che atmosfera si è voluta creare per quelle scene? E che differenza di tono c’era con le scene negli anni ’80, se hai potuto vedere qualcosa?

Non sono sicuro di quale sarà il montaggio finale, ma posso dire che Zack Snyder è un enorme fan del graphic novel di Watchmen e lo conosce dentro e fuori. Zack era veramente irremovibile sull’onorare totalmente il romanzo. Quindi per quelli che hanno letto il fumetto, preparatevi a vederlo “saltar fuori dalla pagina”! Il set e l’atmosfera che si respirava davano l’impressione di aver compiuto un viaggio indietro nel tempo. Nessun dettaglio è stato omesso! Sono cresciuto negli anni ottanta… e avevo dei flashback ad ogni angolo!

La (tragicomica) scena della banca è stata girata, o viene fatto solo un riferimento come nel fumetto? Nel caso sia stata girata, puoi parlarcene un po’?

Ummmm, devo appellarmi al quinto emendamento per questa!

Com’è stato lavorare con Zack Snyder? A tuo parere è riuscito a imprimere la sua personalità alla pellicola, pur nel forte rispetto del graphic novel?

È stato più che un onore e un piacere lavorare con Zack! È veramente il perfetto mix tra puro regista e “regista di attori”, che significa curarsi degli attori, del loro lavoro e di come aiutarli ad ottenere quello di cui necessitano per ogni scena. Ha un magnifico senso dell’umorismo e mantiene nel set un’atmosfera tranquilla e divertente nonostante le lunghe ore o giornate passate in esso. Penso che abbia voluto attenersi al 100% al graphic novel, imprimendo nel contempo il proprio stile e la propria firma al progetto come solo lui poteva! Sono estremamente elettrizzato per l’uscita del film!

Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?

Mi sto preparando per il mio più grande ruolo adesso! Sarò padre per la prima volta tra meno di tre settimane. La mia attenzione è tutta lì al momento!

Let's start with the usual questions. How did you get involved in "Watchmen"? Did you know the graphic-novel?

I was very fortunate to be asked by the Canadian casting director to be her 'reader' - meaning I read the off camera lines for everyone who auditioned for her. It was a great experience and it afforded me the opportunity to meet Zack Snyder. At the end of the process, Zack offered me the role of 'Dollar Bill' because he felt my size, look, demeanor were right for it! I was blown away!!! I was aware of the graphic novel as many friends had read it but I myself had not until I got involved with the project.

Is there any difference between comic's Dollar Bill and the one you're bringing on the screen?

There wasn't a lot of screen time to assert much of the character except that he is an 'everyman' with a strong moral fiber!

Although not very present in the conic book, Dollar Bill fully represents the original naïvety of superheroes, and his end is an outstanding example. Is this naïvety represented in your character?

Very much!  The homemade outfit and the unwavering desire for bring justice to the unjust without all the tools to do so! I love the underdog who wants to change something so much that they are willing to risk everything without being fully aware of the possible repercussions! 

What sensations gives you to dress like a superhero, with all those showy colours, boots and so on? Do you feel ridiculous? Or powerful? Does the costume create a sort of unreal atmosphere? And, if you know what I mean, how uncomfortable is the cloak?

Zack and his crew were amazing at creating this alternate reality for the actors! The costumes and sets were spectacular! And come on - Dressing like a superhero is a child hood dream come true! No longer is it your bed sheet and some red socks - this is a fitted, body specific, professional outfit! Ok maybe it was a little late to fulfill that dream in my 30's but had a blast none-the-less. The quality with which things were done definitely created an unreal atmosphere. I did not feel ridiculous at all... or powerful, but perhaps honor bound to do right by the character and the production which could easily be converted to doing the duty of Dollar Bill the same honor.

We know you shot a newsreel inspired to "Under The Hood", Hollis Mason's autobiography, that will be included in the DVD. We suppose that '40s characters have been analyzed more deeply in it. What can you tell us about it?

I am not sure I can say much at all! It was shot throughout the production and I would have missed a lot of that filming. What I did see and take art in semed to have a pretty good sense of humour about it and I know I am looking forward to seeing it!

Besides the documentary, are there many '40s characters scenes in the film? What kind of mood was created for these scenes? And what were the differences with the '80s scenes, if you saw anything from the concluded shootings?

I am not sure what made the final cut yet but I can say that Zack Snyder is a huge fan of the Watchmen graphic novel and knows it inside and out. Zack was very adamant about honoring the novel to the fullest extent.  So for those who have read the novel - look forward to seeing it 'jump of the page'! The sets and mood for those sets was like a trip back in time.  No detail spared!  I grew up in the eighties... I was having flashbacks left and right!

Was the tragic/comical scene of the bank shot or is there only a reference as in the comic book? In the case it was shot, can you tell us something about it?

Ummmm - I may have to plead the 5th on this one!

How's working with Zack Snyder like? In your opinion, did he succeed in impressing his personality to the film, although with the respect for the graphic novel?

It was beyond an honor and a pleasure to work with Zack! He is very much the perfect mix of director and 'actor's' director meaning aware of actors and their process and how to help them achieve what they need to for each scene. He has a superb sense of humor and keeps the set a comfortable fun environment regardless of longs days and hours. I think he will have stayed 100% true to the novel while styling this project with his signature as only he could! I am extremely excited for it's release!

What are your future projects?

I am preparing for my greatest role right now!  I am going to be a Dad for the first time in less than 3 weeks.  That is where all my attention is at the moment!
